Every year my kids get board games for Christmas as one of their gifts. Sometimes it’s a joint family game, and sometimes each child will get their own game, depending on the cost and what they are into that year.
We have an epic collection now and we still spend a lot of our free time playing board games, either at home or when we go away for the weekends. The kids are old enough now to also play with one another and 9 times out of 10, it doesn’t end with a dice being chucked across the table.
To share the board game love, we’ve put together our top picks for the best board games for Christmas 2024, all family-friendly, elf-approved and perfect for repetitive play.
All of our board games for Christmas are fast to play, easy to learn and don’t require a lengthy set-up or a million rules that leave you lost before you’ve begun. So, let’s “sleigh” Christmas this year with our round-up of the best board games for Christmas.
Win a sleigh full of board games for the whole family to put under the tree as we have five prize packs up for grabs featuring each of our five best board games for Christmas picks.
Let’s find out what they are, shall we??
Best Board Games for Christmas
For Little Ones:Â Hurry up Chicken Butt
RRP: $34.95
Where to buy:Â Amazon
Expect a giggle fest the moment they unwrap this board game and hear the title. And wait til they get their hands on the chicken globe shaker! Designed for kiddies 4+ (and parents and older siblings), this game is like a frantic physical game of Hot Potato but with a chicken.
It comes from the legends behind the Exploding Kittens range of non-board-game games and trust us, it’s a riot and a half! It only takes two minutes per round and it comes with 60 physical activities to perform before passing the Chicken Shaker.
It’s fast-paced and ensures non-stop fun, great for our little ones who often get left out of board games due to the complex rules. No rules here – act out what’s on the card, pass the chicken and laugh out loud.
For Creative Kids: Block Party
RRP: $29
Where to buy: Kmart
If Bob the Builder invented Pictionary, you’d get Block Party – a game of colour, creation and block-building mastery. My kids adore this one and liken it to Lego Masters. It’s ideal for kids aged 8+ as well as adults and is great for encouraging imagination while also spending screen-free time together.
Simply choose one of the secret objects written on your card and grab some blocks. If another player guesses what you’ve made, you both get points. The game takes around 15-20 minutes to play and is suitable for 2-6 players. It’s a fantastic game for families that combines creativity, teamwork, and a dash of friendly competition.
For Active Kids: Let’s Hit Each Other with Fake Swords
RRP: $44.98
Where to buy: JB Hi-FiÂ
Hitting each other with fake swords sounds like any active kid’s favourite activity. Now, add a pack of cards to the mix, plus some pretty awesome-looking fake swords and you’ve got yourself a board game for Christmas that will have them all ho-ho-hollering!
It’s the world’s first sword-fighting card game that involves some strategy, fun, and of course, hitting each other with fake swords. Like all the games on our list, Let’s Hit Each Other with Fake Swords is easy to learn, explain and play and is the perfect combination of strategy and silliness. Perfect for 2-6 players and kids aged 7+, the game takes just 15 minutes to play, comes with no hard-to-pick-up pieces and packs up into a tiny box in seconds, great for trips away.
We recently invited our Mum’s the Word panel to review the game and they gave it a resounding 9.3/10 rating! Check out what they had to say in their Family Board Game Review!
For Tweens and Teens: You Can’t Say Umm
RRP: $34.98
Where to buy: JB Hi-Fi
For the hard-to-shop-for crew, You Can’t Say Umm is a great stocking stuffer that will involve fewer eye rolls and more half-smiles. Heck, they may even Snap about it. Ideal for kids 10+, the game takes 20 minutes to play and involves describing weird things without saying, you guessed it, Umm. Screens down. Brains ready. Let’s Play.
We love how You Can’t Say Umm brings a unique twist on wordplay and communication and also gets the tweens using their brains to speak words to us (other than just making grunting noises). As the game progresses more words become off-limits too which ensures no two games are ever the same.
For Fast-Paced Family Fun: Waffles Vs Pancakes
RRP: $35.00
Where to buy: EB Games
Our final pick for the best board games for Christmas this year is a delicious twist on the viral TikTok trend where you and your opponent attempt to scoop up your breakfast pastry as quickly as possible – and blindfolded, of course. Look out for power-up pancakes, too — these hold special powers that can either award extra points or take them away!
Expect plenty of laughs and high-energy fun as you put two delicious breakfast meals to the test. It’s ideal for the whole family, from little scoopers to adults, and the rules are easy to follow so you can start playing right away without having to explain how to play and set up the board game. There’s also just a dollop of strategy involved too, perfect for the competitive family members. Waffles Vs Pancakes is created by the same folks who whipped up What Do You Meme? and is another winner-winner chicken dinner.
Regardless of the age and stage of your kids, adding a board game to their gift list guarantees a year full of fun. And if you happen to be one of our lucky winners below, you will receive the entire collection to save for Christmas Day. Perfect!
