Roberto Avila Brambila was diagnosed with cancer in 2021, just a few months before his daughter, Andy also received a heartbreaking cancer diagnosis.

For Roberto, it was stomach cancer. For four-year-old Andy, it was brain cancer.

Father chooses to save his daughter over himself

Roberto, his wife Andrea, and his daughter, Andy, who live in Mexico, were faced with a world of grief. While Roberto was undergoing treatment already, they were told his daughter would also need urgent treatment as well.

The family began fundraising but, Roberto decided to put his own treatment on pause to start treatment for his daughter, according to VT.

Just one month after Andy’s brain cancer diagnosis, the little girl lost her dad. She had undergone urgent surgery to help drain fluid in her head just three days before.

‘Always watching over Andy and me’

Andrea, shared this heartbreaking tribute to her husband on Facebook.

“You kept your promise, you didn’t give up, for you it didn’t stay, now I know you will continue with the promise of always watching over Andy and me from heaven. We will miss you so much, I will fulfill my promise and take care of our princess. I love you babe, forever.”

Through the grief of losing her husband, Andrea continued to fight for her little girl who remained in intensive care receiving urgent treatment.

In September, she shared a promising post of her beautiful daughter with this message:

I have faith that you will return to the little school that you love so much, that the braids will return and your smile. I love you with my soul.”

‘Give lots of kisses to daddy’

Just two weeks later, Andy lost her battle with brain cancer and Andrrea lost her little girl, just two months after losing her husband. Andrea shared the news on her Facebook page, also posting a photo of Andy and Roberto together.

“This is how I imagine them now, Andy, I always told you you are the bravest, strongest and most beautiful princess in the whole world, I am happy to be your mom, always.

No more injections or doctors sweetheart, you take a piece of my heart with the yours, give lots of kisses to daddy. I here will wait until it’s my turn to go with you, play a lot, I love you.”

Our hearts absolutely shatter for Andrea for this unimaginable loss. To lose a husband and a child in the same year, from the same disease is terribly unfair. Following her tragic loss, Andrea now uses her platform to spread awareness of others battling horrible diseases, so they can receive support for the medical care that they need.

Mother and son also both diagnosed with cancer

While having two cancer diagnoses in the family is incredibly rare and unfair, it does happen. In 2018 both little Alfie Chivers and his brave mumma, Sara Chivers, died of brain cancer, a battle they fought together for months.

After overcoming her first diagnosis of brain cancer nearly a decade ago, Sara discovered she had three brain tumours in March 2017. In November 2017, Sara and her husband, Leigh discovered their youngest son, Alfie, also had brain cancer.

The duo fought together, side by side, in hospital for months. Sara passed away in January 2018. Alfie passed away in June 2018.  For those wanting to financially support brain cancer research in Australia, please see Cure Brain Cancer or Carrie’s Beanies 4 Cancer.
