The powers of a quality electric breast pump

A good quality breast pump can greatly impact your breastfeeding experience. The last thing any new mum wants to do during their irregular downtime is fiddle with a hard-to-use pump that doesn’t extract much milk. It can be incredibly frustrating and disheartening and can lead to a negative experience with breastfeeding and pumping.

The truth is that breastfeeding WILL feel like a full-time job, especially during the fourth trimester (more on this later), but it does get easier and it starts to become second nature if you have the right tools in your corner.

The Tommee Tippee Made for Me™ Double Electric Breast Pump has been a favourite for years. It’s one of the most advanced electric breast pumps on the market that’s convenient, compact and extra powerful yet gentle. You can use it on both breasts at once (double) or just on one side at a time (single).

Expect a super simple set-up and a super efficient pumping session, no matter how you decide to use it.

8 Reasons we love the Made for Me™ Double Electric Breast Pump

90 MINUTES OF PUMPING POWER: Many electric breast pumps will need to be plugged into a wall to work which can be annoying having to find a seat near an electric outlet. The Made for Me™ doesn’t need to be plugged in to work and comes with 90 minutes of super-pumping cord-free power off one charge. This equates to around 5 express sessions. #winning

USE ANYTIME, ANYWHERE: This pump is so portable so you can take it with you on the go! To charge, plug it into the included USB charger and you’re on your way! Express anywhere, anytime – at work, at the park, on the couch, and even while lounging by the pool.

COMPLETELY CUSTOMISABLE: Every breast is different and Tommee Tippee’s Made for Me™ double electric breast pump comes with 5 different massage modes and 9 express settings.

POWERFUL YET GENTLE: Play around with the various modes and strengths to find the right setting for you. The various settings stimulate the milk flow while still feeling gentle on tender breasts. It also comes with an LED display screen which tells you how long you have expressed for.

BOTTLES INCLUDED: The Made for Me™ comes with everything you need to start your pumping journey including 2 x 150ml Closer to Nature baby bottles with measurement markers so you can keep track of how much you’re expressing. It also connects to all sizes of Closer to Nature and Advanced Anti-Colic baby bottles.

SIMPLE TO SET UP AND CLEAN: No need to get the puzzle board out every time you try to piece together your pump. The Made for Me™ Double Electric Breast Pump includes a one-piece design that’s easy to assemble and easy to clean with hot soapy water, the dishwasher or steriliser.

✅ NO NASTIES: Made from completely BPA and BPS-free materials, you can rest assured that your baby has a super-safe feed. The innovative built-in closed system also means all your precious breastmilk only goes into the bottle, so you don’t waste a single drop.

Breastfeeding through the ages and stages

When you’re breastfeeding, not every day is going to be smooth sailing, but having a high-quality pump can definitely help keep you afloat, even during those extra tricky stages.

Most women will breastfeed for 3 months + and will discover the many stages of breastfeeding that come with this milky ride.

The fourth trimester and breastfeeding

The first stage of breastfeeding is quite the adventure! We’re talking mega mountain boobs, soggy sheets and, of course, the week-long dependence on cabbage leaves. It can take some time for your breasts to realise that you don’t need to produce 190 litres of milk every hour and you may feel like you’re breastfeeding 99% of the day and night.

There will be tears. There will be spilled milk. There will be days when you will feel like this isn’t for you. It’s perfectly normal. Rely on support from friends and family, warm showers, a good breast pump, nipple cream and make sure you stock up on those cabbage leaves!

The no-teeth honeymoon phase

After the initial ebbs and flows, you’ll enter what I like to call the honeymoon phase of breastfeeding where you and bub have a somewhat rhythm and routine and you (kind of) feel like you’re crushing this whole breastfeeding thing. Supply and demand are going well and you are probably getting a bit of a collection of expressed milk for the freezer. Go you!

You’ll usually enter this phrase around the 3-month mark and it will last until your little one

A. Sprouts teeth or
B. Discovers the world around them is far more interesting than your boobs.

The Niplash Phase

Once your baby sprouts teeth, you’ll enter the eventful Niplash phase where your little one learns that they can gently bite down on your nipple AND turn their head to take in the sights. I like to also call this Bungee Cord breastfeeding. Nothing says “I love motherhood” quite like watching your infant use your nipple as a chew toy.

The Eighth Circle of Hell

Also known as Mastitis. Not every woman will enter this breastfeeding phase but it does happen. Heavy sweating, high fever, intense whole body aches, a boob that feels like it’s literally on fire. And don’t forget the strong urge to fall asleep on the cold hard floor and lie there forever. Oh, but you can’t. Because your baby is hungry. Again.

Warm compresses, extra pumping, antibiotics (if needed) and painkillers will help you journey out of the 8th circle of hell and back into happier breastfeeding territory.

The Wean and Less Wakes Phase

Every little one is different when it comes to their weaning journey, but, eventually, your bub will be happy to explore foods and may even decide they don’t need to feed during the night. This is the Golden Age of Breastfeeding.

Prepare for a few mega milk explosions in the mornings though as your breasts get used to not being on call at night.

The Breastfeeding Gymnastics

As the first year of your breastfeeding journey comes to an end, you may enter Toddler Breastfeeding which is the equivalent of attempting to breastfeed a gymnast who refuses to sit still. Upside-down breastfeeding becomes the norm. Simone Biles may be the GOAT in rhythmic gymnastics but mums feeding toddlers are at another level in acrobatics.
