3 Step Slow-Cooked Pea and Ham Soup

This pea and ham soup is an entire meal on its own. So hearty, tasty and easy to make – it will become a regular on your family menu for sure.

You will need:

  • 500g [1 bag] green split peas
  • 1 large brown onion chopped finely
  • 3 garlic gloves chopped finely
  • 1 ham hock [1kg]
  • 2 medium carrots chopped finely
  • 2 celery stalks chopped finely
  • 4 fresh thyme sprigs
  • 2 bay leaves
  • olive oil for frying
  • 8 cups water

Step 1

Rinse peas under cold water in a collander until water runs clear. Drain.

Step 2

Heat oil in a large frying pan and cook garlic and onion, stirring, until onion softens. Place onion mixture into the slow cooker. Stir in peas and remaining ingredients. Cook, covered on low for 8 hours.

Step 3

Remove ham from the cooker. When cool enough to handle, remove the meat from the bone, shred coarsely and return the shredded meat to the slow cooker. Discard skin, fat and bone. Season soup to taste. Serve hot.
