Let us introduce you to the latest hack to keep your avocadoes fresh. It’s not cling wrap or alfoil. It’s not a paper bag or a Tupperware container. Nope. It’s lettuce!
That’s right – the green stuff that’s already in your veggie crisper is all you need to ensure fresh avocados, even if you’ve already cut into them.
Lettuce and avocados. A match made in food waste heaven
New Zealand mum, Cherry Gaddes stumbled upon the avocado hack and shared it on her Facebook page earlier this week.
As she writes,
I accidentally discovered that I have been throwing away first class food wrap. Lettuce leaves, primarily the outer ones that are a bit harder, make excellent food wrap! Since they’re designed for that purpose in the first place… ( who knew!).”
Cherry shared a photo of an avocado she cut over a week ago and it looks green as anything! No browning, not even any freckled brown spots. Amazing!
This avo was cut a week ago, and stored in the fridge ever since, wrapped in a lettuce leaf.”
Avocados, get in my trolley
I don’t know about you guys but I stopped buying avocados because they are so expensive and I know they go off so easily. I can’t count the number of times I’ve gone to use the other half and found it in the fridge, brown and yuck. But not anymore. Avocados – welcome back into my life. I’ve missed you!
The avocado hack is clearly a smashing success with others too. Thousands of people have commented and shared her idea. Cherry also shares that lettuce leaves are great for keeping buns fresh too. Well, there you go – you learn something new every day!

Earlier tonight on another site I read that you can actually freeze advocadoes which can be added to smoothies later
You stone and peel them, either leave them in pieces like that or mash them. put a little lemon juice on them (It stops them from going brown). You can freeze them in snaplock bags (squeeze the air out) freezing in ice cube trays then put them into airtight containers if you want to.
