Is your baby six months old or older and watching you drink from a cup like a hawk? It could be the perfect time to introduce her to her own toddler cup and kick off weaning with bottle to cup transition.
Teaching your little one to drink from a cup is typically a whole lot of wet and wild fun. It’s also something that should be approached with smiles and readiness (theirs) and plenty of patience and encouragement (yours). There’s splashing, tipping, coughing, gulping, dropping of cups and before too long, sweet sips and swallows.
Here’s how to make the bottle to cup transition a smooth, less-wet one for both you and bub!
Bottle to cup transition made easy – monkey see … monkey do!
You’re constantly amazed by how quickly your child watches what you do and copies them, right? Drinking from a cup is no exception! Here’s how to set the sips in motion, using a regular cup or toddler cup.
Using exaggerated, steady movements, lift up a plastic cup with two hands, take a sip and set it back down and encourage them to do the same. Make sure there’s only a little amount of water in the cup so they don’t scare themselves with a big splash when they inevitably spill it down their front. Make it fun while they learn with lots of positive encouragement and words.
Alternatively, if your little one isn’t interested in copying you at all (it can happen!), try sitting them in your lap, gently bringing a cup to their mouth and tipping the tiniest bit of water to their lips to encourage some interest in drinking from it. Set aside a few minutes every day to practice and enjoy a (damp) snuggle while they grasp the concept!
Patience and practice
Transitioning from drinking from a bottle to a cup is a learned skill. It takes patience and lots and lots of repetitive practice to master the technique and bottle to cup transition. Enjoy the tea parties and remember the cheers! action with your little one as they learn and they’ll soon be sipping from a cup!
See and sip without the mess!
