There are two kinds of people. Those who love the Elf on the Shelf. And those who do not. I fall in the latter category with the bare minimum Elf on the Shelf idea effort every evening. I’m talking – look the elf is sitting on top of the vacuum cleaner, how funny. No notes. No props. Certainly, no mess to clean up.
Cece falls in the first category and she’s caused quite the stir with her recent Elf idea. Her viral video was meant to spark a little bit of festive fun on TikTok but many have slammed her cruel joke, suggesting she’s taken it too far.
Fishing for Views
Cece, who lives in America is a big fan of showcasing her very strategic Elf on the Shelf setups. The mum posts her evening Elf antics on TikTok with plenty of people tuning in to see what she’s up to. She has left Elf in a pair of underwear stuck to the fridge and the Elf cut up her kid’s T-shirt in another prank.
Recently Cece’s Elf decided to go fishing in the bathtub. But instead of doing what most of us do and using fake fish (and a few pairs of Crocs for crocodiles, of course), she decided to use real ones.
In her now-viral video, you can see the mum filling up the bathtub with water, placing the Elf on the corner with a fishing rod and a Gone Fishing sign. She then dumps a whole bag of live goldfish into the tub. The goldfish are seen swimming in the tub, ready for their big debut in the morning when the kids wake up.
But people were left wondering what happened to the fish after the prank was over and it was time to move the Elf. Would she keep the fish in a home aquarium? Return them to the pet store? Did they even survive the night in a bathtub?
Cece confirmed the fish did not have a happy holiday ending. According to Cece, the fish will become food for her sister’s pet turtle.

‘Tis the Season to Not Kill Fish for Elf’s Benefit
As you can guess, many people weren’t too pleased with her prank to kill a bunch of fish just for Elf on the Shelf and the chance of TikTok fame. But fame came with thousands dashing to the comment section quicker than Santa on Christmas Eve.
The video has received seven million views with some praising the mum and her Elf on the Shelf prank as “cute” and “creative”.
However, plenty of others were shocked at the lengths Cece would go to just for Elf on the Shelf.
“This is actually disturbing. How careless and selfish. Let’s just kill a bunch of fish for Elf on the Shelf,” one person wrote.
“Absolutely disgusting that you guys just buy fish for an Elf on the Shelf idea!” said another.
“[You] could’ve easily used fake fish, this is disgusting and cruel.”
The post also reached Elisa Allen, the Vice President of Programmes at PETA, who said, “Fish, unlike The Elf on the Shelf, are living, feeling beings with personalities and a desire to be free, and it’s sickening to see them doomed – reduced to objects of a gimmick for social media views.”
So, what do you think?
Did she go too far to kill dozens of fish for social media views? If you are an Elf on the Shelfer, we’d love to know which side of the fence you sit with this one.
