The VERY Surprising Top Google Searches in Australia this Year

When in doubt, ask Google. It’s something we all do as second nature now. But what are other fellow Aussies googling? Surely not everyone is Googling random things like “Why is my middle toe so long?” like I am, right?

While “middle toe length” didn’t make the list of the top Google searches in Australia for 2024, we did have some interesting queries! Google recently revealed the most searched-for words, phrases, definitions and people of 2024.

Let’s take a look at who and what made the list.

Top Ten Aussie Google Searches in 2024

1. US Election

We had our own Queensland elections in October but the US Election certainly ‘trumped’ that.  “US Election” was the most searched-for phrase of 2024 with “Who won the US election?” as the most searched question.

2. Olympic medal tally

The runner-up for most-searched-for phrases on Google for 2024 was ‘Olympic medal tally’ which, by the way, was 53 medals, including 18 golds. We ranked fourth on the medal table behind the USA, China and Japan.

3. Euros

Aussies and their sport… another sporting event to make the top 10 was the UEFA Euro 2024 tournament where Spain beat England in the final.

4. Liam Payne

Taking the fourth position was former One Direction band member Liam Payne whose death after falling from a hotel balcony has caused some serious waves and conspiracy theories. The world still has a lot of unanswered questions about what exactly happened that we’re sure will unfold in 2025.

5. Taylor Swift

Taking the fifth place position is Tay Tay herself who had an epic 2024 on and off the stage. With her Aussie tour, it’s no wonder she was a top hit on Google.

Connections was the the 2024 version of Wordle and is another New York Times puzzle that you can play online. I’ve never heard of it, to be honest, but looks like I’m the only one!

Number 7 on the list is ANOTHER sporting event – COPA America which is a popular South American football competition. Argentina won it.

8. T20 World Cup

Cricket proved to be another hot sport in Google land with Aussies keen to keep up with the T20 World Cup scores.

Coming in at number 9 was Ticketek Marketplace as Aussies flocked to try and snap tickets to Taylor and Coldplay.
