Cairo Winitana was on a family holiday in Fiji when the unimaginable happened. The eight-year-old boy was allegedly electrocuted and found unresponsive in a garden bed at the hotel resort.
He was rushed to hospital where his death was confirmed.
‘Beautiful blue eyes’
Cairo lived in Sydney with his mum, dad, and older siblings. The devastated family remains in Fiji as they come to terms with this sudden and heartbreaking loss and make plans to bring their son home.
Cairo’s devastated mum, Amber De Thierry shared a short and gut-wrenching post on Facebook with a black and white photo of her kissing her son when he was a baby.
“I loved you, my son, from the moment I found out I was carrying you and will love you forever more, my beautiful, beautiful blue eyes,” she wrote.
While the details surrounding Cairo’s unexpected death are not confirmed, we do know the incident happened at Club Wyndham Denarau Island resort.
“Initial information gathered is that the child was allegedly electrocuted however the post-mortem will have to confirm that,” a Fiji police spokesman said.
A spokesman for Wyndham Destinations Asia Pacific sent condolences in the wake of the tragedy.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of this young life and offer our sincerest condolences to the family. Our thoughts remain with them during this difficult time.”
The resort management team said it is working closely with local police and authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding Cairo’s death, and is fully cooperating with the investigation.
Bringing Cairo home
Friends and family have rallied around the devastated family and have set up a GoFundMe page to help the family with the costs of bringing their son home from Fiji – something that no parent should ever have to go through.

Lucky Update: Gravely Ill Newborn Flown from Bali to Australia
Earlier this week we also shared the story of Lucky Love, a 7-week-old newborn who developed a severe infection in Bali.
Unfortunately, the Bali hospital was not equipped to save Lucky’s life but, thanks to the kindness of donators, Lucky’s family raised nearly $200,000 to get her back to Australia and into urgent treatment in the hospital.
Lucky’s mum shared an update on her Instagram, explaining that Lucky has now arrived in Brisbane and is receiving the care and treatment she needs to survive.
It was a long and nerve racking journey though we were made to feel very safe by being in such capable hands. Our strong girl did very well on the plane and there was no complications. Lucky is stable now though she is still in very critical condition.
We cannot even begin to express our gratitude! Thank You @medicalrescuegroup , all of the nurses/doctors in Bali, the hospital here in Australia and everyone who donated to make this a reality.”
You can follow Lucky’s road to recovery through her GoFundMe account.

Are tragic incidents such as these covered by Travel Insurance?? Some companies you have to pay the bills and then claim it back from the insurance company. I know a man who was injured in Japan. They demanded his credit card before they would start to treat him for severely fractured bones. Fortunately he had enough to get treatment.
