On Monday morning two babies died in a Cairns apartment. Now Police and Cairns Child Protection officers are investigating the death of the twins.

Paramedics were allegedly called to the apartment, located at Carmeny Court in Aumuller Street, and desperately tried to save the twins. Ambulance crews arrived at the unit block at about 11am and performed CPR on the babies, but were unable to save them.

While there is not a lot of details around what exactly happened, media reports claim the babies were three months old and had special needs.

Police have not suggested the twins died under suspicious circumstances but have noted both babies were subject to special needs care.

Cairns Child Protection Investigation Unit is now investigating the incident. Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

More to come.
