What is Temu? Here’s What You Need to Know Before You “Shop Like a Millionaire”

Temu has taken the online shopping world by storm, luring in bargain hunters with super cheap prices, endless deals, and free shipping—but is it really as good as it seems? If you’ve been eyeing those crazy low prices but aren’t sure whether to take the plunge, you’re not alone! While some shoppers swear by the savings, others have had mixed experiences with quality, shipping times, and customer service. So, if you’re sitting on the fence, here’s what you need to know before clicking “buy now.”

What is Temu?

Temu is the latest online shopping craze, offering super cheap deals on everything from clothes and homewares to gadgets and kids’ toys. Think of it like an online bargain bin where you can score big savings by buying directly from manufacturers. Owned by the same company behind the Chinese shopping giant Pinduoduo, Temu has exploded in popularity thanks to its crazy low prices, free shipping, and constant sales. It’s everywhere on social media, and if you’ve ever been tempted to check it out, you’re definitely not alone!

But before you fill your cart, there are a few things to know. Because most items ship from overseas, delivery can take a while, and quality can be hit or miss. Some mums love it for the bargains, while others have been disappointed with what turns up. Plus, there are privacy concerns and mixed reviews on customer service, so it’s worth shopping with caution. That said, if you love a good deal and don’t mind a bit of a gamble, Temu can be a fun way to snag some bargains—just be sure to read the reviews first!

In most instances, the shipping is free and you generally need to spend a minimum (but this depends). Temu can be accessed directly online or through an App. A Roy Morgan survey in March this year found that 1.26 million Australians shop the site each month, with domestic sales alone on track to reach $1.3 billion this year, according to Choice

What’s With All Their Gimmicks, Games and Great Discounts?

Temu is big on gimmicks, almost always promising discounts, credit back and free gifts. This can be highly annoying but it’s also quite effective for luring shoppers in and thinking they are getting a crazy good deal.

The shopping experience is made into a game with spinning wheels and ways to earn credit.  Of course, if you look beneath the surface you’ll see these really are nothing but gimmicks but they do seem to work and I’ve been lured into gifts, credits and more on multiple occasions.

You get what you pay for

In terms of cost, you won’t find anything cheaper and this goes for everything – homewares, electronics, kids’ gifts, clothing, stationary, beauty products, pet items, anything!

But, you often get what you pay for and the odds of getting a product that is high-quality isn’t always in your favour.

Your Package is in Customs… Forever

Another gamble? That the products will actually show up. But this can work in your favour.

You see, Temu offers a $5 credit if the product doesn’t show up by the allotted timeframe. If the product doesn’t arrive after 30 days, they will offer you a full refund (or credit) or reship the items.

During busy seasons, such as Christmas when the post offices are flooding with orders, there’s a pretty good chance the items won’t arrive on time.

For example, during November last year, at least $300 worth of products didn’t make it to me on time. I asked for refunds on every item and lo and behold, every package did eventually turn up, just a few days after the refund went through. And because I did order them early, they still arrived before Christmas. Free Christmas goodies – Yay!

This was a massive problem this year with thousands and thousands of Temu users experiencing the same thing. Since then I believe Temu has stopped using certain carriers who were not getting the products out on time and have since switched to only using Australia Post so your packages should arrive on time in most instances.

Temu Safety Recalls

There’s also the issue with the actual safety of the products. CHOICE found toys being sold on the platform were failing Australian safety standards, specifically requirements for safely securing button batteries.

Temu has also recalled a few items – mostly toys and electronics as well as a flammable jumper after a child suffered horrific burns.

Is Temu Safe?

Safety is always of utmost importance. I wouldn’t use the shopping platform if you’re looking for high-quality items, for anything with button batteries or for anything that could be considered unsafe if in the wrong hands.

But if you’re asking me personally, is Temu worth it? I’m going to say yes.

Sure, I’ve had some shocker purchases turn up that I’ve just had to laugh at but none have been particularly dangerous (touch wood).  I’ve also received plenty of cheap products that make great gag gifts and activities to keep the kids entertained.

If you like high-quality and speedy delivery, Temu is not for you. But if you like a bit of a gamble when it comes to your purchases, then Temu will certainly deliver the goods. Or at least refund you when they get stuck in customs.
