How to Spring Clean Your Home in a Weekend

The golden rule? Work dry to wet. Get the dust, crumbs and fur up first, then deep clean, then mop. Do it the other way round and you’re basically making mud.

How often should you deep clean your carpet? According to BISSELL Senior Chemist Jim Pell, carpets and rugs benefit from a maintenance deep clean at least every six months. Homes with pets or allergy sufferers may need it more often.

So let’s get started, shall we?

Saturday Morning: Tackle Dust, Dirt and Pet Hair

Start dry. Get under the couch, along the skirting boards and into the corners nobody’s looked at since winter. If you skip this bit, everything that comes after is just pushing muck around.

Got a dog or cat who sheds like it’s their full-time job? The BISSELL PowerClean FurFinder 200W cordless stick vacuum was made for exactly this. It has a 200W motor, a tangle-free brush roll (so you’re not sitting on the floor snipping hair off it with scissors) and a FurFinder headlight that shows up the fur and debris you’d otherwise miss.

Fair warning, you will see things you can’t unsee.

 Saturday Afternoon: Deep Cleaning

With the loose stuff gone, it’s time for the carpets and rugs that have soaked up a whole winter of muddy footprints, spilt Milo and dropped snacks.

1. Deep Cleaning the Carpets

The BISSELL CleanView HydroSteam carpet cleaner combines steam, water and cleaning formula to loosen and lift stubborn dirt. Its HydroSteam technology helps break down sticky, stuck-on messes, which makes it a handy one to have in a house full of kids and pets.

Top tip: Do the carpets on Saturday afternoon so they’ve got the rest of the day (and overnight) to dry before the troops trample all over them.

2. Deep cleaning the Couch, Mattresses and Car Seats

Be honest. When did you last properly clean the couch? Between movie nights, snack spills and the dog claiming the good cushion, it’s probably holding more than we’d like to think about.

Jim Pell explains that everyday contact leaves skin oils, dead skin cells, pet dander and dust on upholstery. Lovely.

The BISSELL SpotClean portable carpet cleaner is built for these targeted jobs. It uses a spray, scrub and extract cleaning action, and its flexible hose gets right into couch seams and car footwells. Use it on suitable fabric couches, rugs and car upholstery. For mattresses, always check the manufacturer’s care instructions before wet cleaning.

With summer entertaining around the corner, having a portable spot cleaner on standby is a very good idea. Red wine on a pale rug never waits for a convenient moment.

Sunday Morning: Vacuum and Mop Hard Floors in One Go

If there’s one job we’d happily never do again, it’s the floors. You vacuum, you mop, and five minutes later someone tramps through the kitchen in their footy boots.

Enter the BISSELL CrossWave OmniForce Edge 2-in-1 wet dry hard floor cleaner. It vacuums and washes at the same time on sealed hard floors, so there’s no swapping between machines. Its ZeroGap technology cleans right up to the edges, and a dedicated dry vacuuming mode handles quick once-overs.

Breakfast crumbs and muddy paw prints? Sorted in one pass.

Sunday Afternoon: Check the Hidden Cleaning Hotspots

Before you put the kettle on and declare victory, do one last lap of the spots we all forget. In BISSELL’s spring cleaning guide to the hidden hotspots you might be missing, Jim flags curtains and soft furnishings as places where dust and debris quietly build up.

Do a quick check of:

  • Behind and along the curtains
  • Under the furniture
  • Along the rug edges
  • Pet beds and your dog’s favourite spot on the couch
  • Those neglected living room corners

And remember, you don’t need to clean absolutely everything. Focus on the rooms your family actually lives in and save the less urgent jobs for another weekend. You’re not aiming for a magazine shoot. You’re aiming for a fresher, comfier home you can actually enjoy.

Get Your Home Ready for Summer Entertaining

Barbecues, birthday parties, Christmas drinks . . . the silly season is coming in hot, so now’s the time to get ahead of the mess.

Will there still be accidents? Of course. Someone will knock over a drink, the dog will bring half the backyard inside, and the kids will somehow find chocolate five minutes before the guests arrive. At least this time you’ll be ready.
