If you have $199, a bit of free time, a few tins of paint, perhaps some spare timber and a hint of DIY talent, then have we got the weekend project for you!
Step one: Go to Kmart. Step two. Buy the $199 Kmart kids’ cubby house (you may have to fight a few mums for it, but, hey, that’s pretty standard when at Kmart). Step three: Hack the hell out of it.
You buy the cubby house (and beat the crowds). And we’ll handle the hacks. Welcome, DIY mums, to your child’s cubby house dreams.
Thanks to these clever social-media-sharing Kmart mums, you too can hack the Kmart cubby house into an epic outdoor oasis. Hell, you can even kick the kids out and make it your own little mummy me-time wine shack.
Well, that’s what I’m doing at least. #stuffthekids #mummywantsacubbyhousedammit
Deck it out
How do you make a cheap cubby house look like a million bucks? Add a massive deck around it. We are loving the blue and white combo!
But you could also release your inner white picket fence, with this pretty in pink version. Or how about adding an awning for even more outdoor entertaining space?
The White House
Okay, so this angelic adobe is pretty much the presidential suite of cubby houses. Designed with love by mum Alicia, for her two tots, Hudson and Harlow, we are especially loving the added green and gold elements.
To achieve the look Alicia spray painted the entire cubby white. She picked up the flooring from Ikea and also spray painted the kiddies’ outdoor furniture to match.
Our Swan Life did a similar version, but added a bit of pink to her daughter’s palace.
Cubby cafes
From quaint cubby to chic cafe, this uber-hip transformation is sure to delight and inspire. House of Eramiha designed it for her daughter, Quinn.
The all-white oasis includes fairy lights scattered around the sides and the side window acts as a perfect little servery for high teas. LOVE!
Project Nursery also shared their take on the Kmart kids cubby house turned cafe which includes a fresh lemonade stand!
Little House on the Walkway
Next on our pathway to cubby house perfection we stumble across this enchanting cottage by The Love Designed Life, complete with a stone walkway, outdoor lights and vibrant planters.
The little green wreath has got to be the icing on the cubby house cake.
Fit for the fairies
Add a little bit of magic to your kids’ cubby house with this whimsical idea.Â
Take one cubby house, add some cheap fairy lights, planters and outdoor mushroom stools and you’ve got the perfect fairy garden that can accommodate the kiddies too.
It’s pretty much the real life version of Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom. #mindblown
Painted perfection
Perhaps the easiest way to jazz up the cubby is to add a few coats of paint to it. The royal blue and white combo certainly stands out! And is clearly fit for a prince or princess!
Or you could go with purple reign, equally as regal and elegant! Other options clever mums have used? Pastels are a popular choice, including lilac, sky blue, pink and light grey.Â
Regardless of what colour you choose and what accessories you add, the Kmart kids’ cubby house is sure to keep the kiddies entertained AND add a bit of DIY bling to your backyard.
