No Green Thumb Required. The Happy Lawn Solution with Munns Golf Course Green

Growing up as a kid in Australia, you see a lot of grass. School ovals, local parks, median strips, botanic gardens and even the city centre has awesome patches of green.

But nothing quite beats the Australian backyard lawn. Sending the kids out to play on a nice morning [or even on a crappy one!] on the green grass is quintessential to our way of life. “Out you go!” is something that gets yelled encouraged regularly in our house. And out they do go, most times with some sort of ball.

Tania, our Deputy Editor has a husband who takes his lawn VERY seriously. Thankfully too, ‘cause neither of HER thumbs are green. He knows the type of grass they have and knows the things he needs to do to keep it healthy, weed-free and as lush as possible for her kids to then destroy play on. Which is why, he tells her, he uses Munns products. I know, I know – that sounds like an infomercial! But it’s TRUE. He’s one of those researcher-types and he knows, from tried and tested experience that Munns never lets you down and he swears by, organically enriched fertiliser, Munns Golf Course Green.

Of course you’ve got to follow the instructions [apparently he’s an instruction-follower from way back] and so he knows he’s got to feed the lawn about 3 or 4 times a year and give it regular long watering to encourage deep root growth. Using Golf Course Green also makes life a bit easier as it includes a wetting agent [Munns Wetta-Lawn] which is perfect for our tough Australian summers and means it slows down the release of the Golf Course Green, so your lawn is greener, longer with less mowing.

So since she’s been using Munns products for years, when Mum Central had the opportunity to review their Golf Course Green, it was a no brainer that I should try it out on my own backyard!

We’d like to think we’ve got a pretty healthy front and back lawn. We don’t obsess over it though. We probably fertilise it once a year and that’s about it. A bit like Tania’s gardening ‘prowess’ above, my green thumb certainly needs an adjustment or two (just ask my poor plants in the middle of a hot spell … who’s with me here?)

Anyway here’s the before pics of both front and back.

Not dead, but clearly we can see some patches that need some nutrients and a whole lot of love there towards the back of my front lawn in quite a dry patch.

Munns-Review-Front-Lawn-Before

Munns-Review-Back-Lawn-BeforeThat said, I’m a bit partial to the odd lawn fertiliser so when Munns reached out to see if we wanted to review their Golf Course Green, I (secretly) jumped at the opportunity.

Now my husband Jason is the king of our lawn. It’s his thing. He mows, snips and fertilises front and back as required. What he does do is keep it in pretty good condition. It’s Kikuyu – which is hardy, drought tolerant and pretty hard to kill. But it WAS in need of a little nutrition, especially in readiness for another hot Australian summer so timing couldn’t have been better!

So here’s my top 4 benefits of the Golf Course Green:

  1. It’s organic and supplies essential nutrients with trace elements. Enough said.
  2. No harmful chemicals means it’s far healthier to distribute compared to many chemical-based fertilisers
  3. It uses less water as it’s more like a dirt mixture than traditional pellets, so you don’t need to water it in so much! #winning
  4. It’s versatile – it promotes healthy growth without extra mowing and can be used on all lawn varieties.

To be honest, looking at the before and after pics, really makes you realise just how lazy we’ve been with our lawn. It took all of 10 or 15 minutes to apply the fertiliser to our front and back lawn, and then a watering in. We used to have our sprinklers set to a few minutes a day on an auto-setting but Munns have told me that I should be watering once a week for 30 minutes in the morning to encourage a deeper root system, so we’ve changed that set up.

The pics below are Day 1, 6 and 10. I can imagine what it’s going to look like by day 14!

So there you have it! I can honestly say that this stuff works and it ticks all the right boxes for me. Take a look a all those dark green patches on Day 10 in my back yard (left pic). Seriously impressive! When compared to Day 1, you can really see just how full and wholesome it’s become!

Best of all, it’s easy to use, organic [so safe for my kids and my dog] and produced by a genuine, family-owned business that have been around for many, many years. I know that might not be important to some people but it rates highly in my books.

And now that the lawn is fixed, I’m moving on to my roses. Hellooooo Munn’s Betta Bloom…Mums-Choice-Logo-250

We loved Munns Golf Course Green and it’s certainly earned itself our Mum’s Choice Thumbs Up Award!
