REVIEW: Tommee Tippee Made for Me Electric Breast Pump

We need to talk about breast pumps ladies, because not all breast pumps are made the same. Some work like a dream and will have you expressing litres of milk to store in the freezer. Others, well, they just don’t cut the mustard.

Breast pumping isn’t always easy either. That natural let-down that happens when you look at your baby is harder with a machine. The last thing you need is for your breast pump to make you feel like a cow, or make so much noise that the neighbours think you’re operating heavy machinery.

So we decided to test one of the newest breast pumps on the market, the Tommee Tippee Made for Me Electric Breast Pump.

Tommee Tippee Made For Me Electric Breast PumpThis breast pump is portable, lightweight and discreet enough to give you confidence and freedom to express breast milk when and where you want. It’s extremely quiet and gives you a choice of massage and express modes so that you can discover the most comfortable way to stimulate your milk flow and express your breast milk.

It’s also USB rechargeable too! You can power up and use this baby whenever and wherever you want, either in or out of home, so don’t need to be next to a powerpoint. – you could even charge while in the car or from a portable battery pack!  . Hello, convenience! Want to watch Netflix while you eat chocolate and pump on the sofa? No problem. A full charge gives you over 60 minutes of power to pump on the go

Tommee Tippee also did lab testing to make sure this pump is quieter than the leading best pump available – so you’re not even going to need to push the volume button on the telly.

Meet our reviewer

We gave the Tommee Tippee Made for Me Electric Breast Pump to Mum Central writer Keely Clarke to put it through its paces.

Keely, 30, is breastfeeding her five-week-old baby Avery. Like many mums, Keely has had some issues with breastfeeding including nipple trauma and an oversupply on one side.

Keely says she wants to pump for comfort: “If she sleeps in the engorgement and discomfort is very real!” She also wants her husband to be able to take a feed each day or two so she can sleep in or pop out of the house without worrying if she wakes up.

And she’s keen to maintain a freezer stash.

“We recently had an incident where a very large branch from one of our trees crashed down within a metre of me – my husband and I were joking after about him needing to bottle feed while I was in hospital if something had happened.”

So what did she think?

The first thing Keely raved about was the weight of this breast pump.

The pump is incredibly light! I barely noticed the weight when I was holding it. The power source is also light enough that I could fit it into my handbag without noticing the extra weight.

That’s a huge advantage for mums who like to get out of the house. Or mums who have to go to work and express in the bathrooms.

The power source on the Tommee Tippee Made for Me Electric Breast Pump is smaller than a bottle and the pump itself is also compact.

These easily fit into the front pocket of my nappy bag which is great if I’m wanting to be able to pump on the go or for when I return to work if I want to continue pumping.

Easy enough for beginners

The Tommee Tippee Made for Me Electric Breast Pump is light and it’s also super easy to use. Keely says it only took her a few minutes to put the breast pump together and with only three buttons (on/swap mode, faster, slower) it was easy to hit the ground running from the first use.

Even for expert mums, this is worth the purchase because it will make expressing easier and more convenient than larger pumps.

Oh so quiet

While many breast pumps can make an awful racket, Keely says the Tomee Tippee pump was really quiet. Tomee Tippee actually tested this pump in the lab to make sure it was quiet enough to be discreet.

I’m so impressed with the sound! If it’s running you can’t hear it unless you are within a metre or so! I can happily pump away in front of the tv without distracting anyone else watching with me!

The mode that works for you

The pump comes with five massage modes and nine expresses modes because all breasts are different and some require more stimulation than others to get the milk moving. You can choose the setting that works best for you in terms of stimulation and comfort.

Keely used the massage mode and says it actually felt quite similar to her baby. You can also increase the strength of the massage mode to mimic just how your baby feels when she is breastfeeding.

On this mode, it does 10 quick pulses and then a long pulse which feels like when I feed Avery and she starts as if she hasn’t seen a boob all week before settling down. It’s very simple to then switch to express mode (one click) once the massage has started to get your milk flowing.

You’re also less likely to waste milk with this pump because the hygienic closed system prevents backflow. Breast milk only goes into the bottle, not into the air tube or pump so every drop of breast milk is collected. The pump was so effective, Keely was able to get 180ml in 11minutes.

Tommee Tippee Made For Me Electric Breast PumpWhat about comfort?

Again, Keely says this pump exceeded expectations. The silicone mould fit snuggly and comfortably around her breast. The breast pump also quickly warmed to body temperature and was “nice and soft on my boob”.

I barely felt it all even when it was drawing my nipple out.

Handy timer

The Tommee Tippee Made for Me Electric Breast Pump has an LED screen that lets you see how long you’ve been expressing for. Keely says this feature was really handy as it saved her having to keep an eye on the time as she pumped.

It also makes it easy to try and keep my timings even on each side so hopefully, my supply evens out.

Is it affordable?

This breast pump retails for $220. There may be cheaper devices on the market but this one is worth every cent, Keely says. She has now ditched her plans to look into other popular and hospital grade brands.

I will definitely be recommending this whenever I hear a mum or mum- to-be asking about pumps. It’s affordable, easy to use and does a great job, I can’t ask for more.
