The year is 1944, and life in Britain’s cities becomes increasingly perilous with World War II and the Blitz on its doorstep. Manchester is rife with bombings and enemy soldiers so children are sent to the Yorkshire village of Oakworth, to flee the violence and escape to safer surroundings.
There to meet them on the train station platform are Bobbie Waterbury (Jenny Agutter, reprising her iconic role in the original film), her daughter, Annie (Sheridan Smith), and grandson Thomas (Austin Haynes).
Bobby, 60 is now the retired headmistress of the local high school, that has been called upon to set up an emergency school for evacuee children flooding into the countryside to escape from the bombing of the industrial Northern cities.
All the children are selected to be given homes by the locals but due to a request from officials not to split siblings up, the Watts trio are left. When nobody else takes them, Bobbie welcomes them into their home. Quickly the three children are soon settling into their new life in the countryside. They soon learn to become clever detectives as they keep watch for enemy soldiers.
When the children discover injured American soldier Abe (KJ Aikens) hiding out in the railyard at Oakworth Station, they are thrust into a dangerous quest to assist their new friend who, like them, is a long way from home.
What unfolds is a magical adventure of love, friendship, trust and loyalty. The three evacuee children were brilliant actors too – Lily (Beau Gadsdon), Pattie (Eden Hamilton) and Ted (Zac Cudby).
The Railway Children Return is shot at picturesque locations in Yorkshire including Haworth, The Brontë Parsonage, Oakworth station and the well-known railways that feature in the film, which are all part of the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway.
The movie takes mysterious twists and turns, in a heartwarming storyline, that will keep you glued right to the end!
The Railway Children returns launches in cinemas nationwide on September 15, just in time for the school holidays. It’ll make a great family outing or playdate idea so be sure to pop this on your ‘must do’ list these holidays.
