Victorian Public Holidays 2027: The Sneaky Hack That Turns 27 Leave Days Into 65 Days Off

If your annual leave balance is looking a little sad (or you’ve been hoarding it like the last Tim Tam in the packet), 2027 is shaping up nicely for anyone working in Victoria.

With a bit of calendar Tetris, 27 days of annual leave in 2027 gets you 65 days away from work, spread across seven proper breaks. Weekends included, obviously. We’re good, but we’re not miracle workers.

The bonus for parents? Three of those breaks line up with Victorian school holidays 2027, so you’re not burning precious leave while the kids are still in class.

Grab the calendar, a pen and possibly a cuppa. Here’s your 2027 annual leave planner for Victoria.

We’ve lined up all the Victorian public holidays 2027 has to offer, so you don’t have to.

Victorian Public Holidays 2027: every long weekend, month by month

JANUARY:
Australia Day 2027: 4 leave days for 9 days off

Australia Day falls on Tuesday 26 January 2027.

Take Monday 25 January and Wednesday 27 to Friday 29 January as annual leave, and you’re free from Saturday 23 January to Sunday 31 January.

That’s 4 days of annual leave for 9 days off. Couch, beach, road trip or the annual hunt for school shoes that still fit. Your call.

One heads up: students in Victorian government schools start Term 1 on Thursday 28 January, so this break straddles the first days of school. Perfect if you want to be there for the first-day photo at the front door. Less perfect if you were eyeing a week in Bali.

MARCH:
Labour Day 2027: 4 leave days for 9 days off

Labour Day lands on Monday 8 March.

Take Tuesday 9 to Friday 12 March as annual leave and you’ve turned 4 leave days into 9 days off, from Saturday 6 March to Sunday 14 March.

March is when the school routine starts to grind. Lunchboxes, readers, the permission slip you find screwed up in the bottom of the bag three days late. And because the kids are at school that week, a chunk of those 9 days is basically yours. We won’t tell.

EASTER 2027:
4 leave days for 10 days off

Easter is a cracker for stretching your leave. In 2027, Good Friday is 26 March, Easter Saturday is 27 March, Easter Sunday is 28 March and Easter Monday is 29 March, and all four are public holidays in Victoria.

Take Tuesday 30 March to Friday 2 April as annual leave, and you’re away from work from Friday 26 March to Sunday 4 April. That’s 10 days off for 4 days of leave.

Even better, this one sits right in the autumn school holidays. Term 1 finishes on Thursday 25 March and Term 2 doesn’t start until Monday 12 April, so the whole family is free at once.

Yes, some of those 10 days will involve small people running entirely on chocolate. Still, 10 days is 10 days.

JUNE:
King’s Birthday 2027: 4 leave days for 9 days off

The King’s Birthday public holiday falls on Monday 14 June 2027.

Take Tuesday 15 to Friday 18 June off and you’ll have 9 days away from work, from Saturday 12 June to Sunday 20 June.

By June, most of us are gazing longingly at the heater and the doona. It’s a good excuse for a cosy winter getaway without blowing a full week of leave. Just note the winter school holidays don’t start until Saturday 26 June, so this one is a kids-at-school break.

SEPTEMBER:
AFL Grand Final 2027: 4 leave days for 9 days off

Footy fans, mark this one in permanent marker. The AFL has locked in the 2027 Grand Final for Saturday 2 October, the first October decider in a non-COVID year since 2016. That puts the Grand Final eve public holiday on Friday 1 October.

The Victorian Government still lists the date as subject to the AFL schedule, so keep an eye out for official confirmation before you lock in flights.

Take Monday 27 to Thursday 30 September as annual leave and you’re off from Saturday 25 September to Sunday 3 October. That’s another 4 days of annual leave for 9 days off.

And here’s the sweet bit. This break lands in the second week of the spring school holidays (Term 3 ends Friday 17 September, Term 4 starts Monday 4 October). Parade, footy, family time and nobody needs a lunchbox packed. Bliss.

NOVEMBER:
Melbourne Cup 2027: 4 leave days for 9 days off

Melbourne Cup Day falls on Tuesday 2 November 2027.

Take Monday 1 November and Wednesday 3 to Friday 5 November as annual leave, and you’ll have 9 days off from Saturday 30 October to Sunday 7 November.

Country Victorians, check this one first. Some regional councils swap Cup Day for their own local public holiday, so make sure your area actually gets the Tuesday off before you plan around it.

DECEMBER:
Christmas and New Year 2027: 3 leave days for 10 days off

Now for the best value break of the year.

Christmas Day falls on Saturday 25 December and Boxing Day on Sunday 26 December. Because both land on a weekend, Victoria gets extra public holidays on Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December. Then New Year’s Day 2028 falls on a Saturday, which means another bonus public holiday on Monday 3 January 2028.

Take Wednesday 29, Thursday 30 and Friday 31 December as annual leave, and you’re off from Saturday 25 December to Monday 3 January 2028. That’s 10 days off for just 3 days of leave.

School’s already out from Saturday 18 December, so this one gives the whole family a proper stretch between the Christmas chaos and real life. Assuming anyone in your house remembers what real life looks like by then.

Do Victorians get a public holiday for ANZAC Day 2027?

Sadly, no extra day this time. ANZAC Day falls on Sunday 25 April 2027, and Victoria marks it on the day itself, so there’s no replacement Monday public holiday.

Before you hit submit on that leave request

Check your workplace rules, your roster and your actual leave balance first. Part-timers, your leave accrues differently, so do the maths on your own hours.

And get in early. There’s a very good chance you’re not the only one in the office eyeing off these dates.

Make your annual leave work harder in 2027

If you can snag the days, 2027 is a very good year to squeeze more out of your leave balance. Because sometimes you don’t need an overseas holiday. You just need nine days where nobody from work can email you and nobody at home is yelling, “Mum, where are my socks?”

Which break are you locking in first?
