Growing up, Chirawan never had enough at home. Her father drank most of what little money came in, and there was nothing left for shoes, a school uniform, or the basics a kid needs to just be a kid.

So when a friend mentioned a way to earn some money nearby, she went. No one sat her down and explained what she’d actually be walking into. No one warned her.

On her very first day, a drunk customer grabbed her and pressed his face against hers while she cried. That became her normal. Men arriving in groups she had no way to refuse, kept drunk or drugged, shown almost no kindness at all. She’d already learned not to expect care from her own family. She found the same thing here, and the money was the only reason she stayed.

Chirawan is safe now. She was rescued, and today she’s the one writing what comes next, a life defined by who she’s becoming, not by what was done to her.

But for every child like Chirawan, there are more than a million still waiting.

These are the child trafficking numbers that should stop you mid-scroll

This isn’t a problem from decades ago, and it isn’t happening somewhere disconnected from us. It’s happening right now, while our own kids are at school or asleep down the hall.

• Over 1 million children are trapped in commercial sexual exploitation globally
• 59% of trafficked children come from our own region, Asia Pacific
• $99 billion a year is made from this industry, roughly $11 million every hour

Behind every one of those numbers is a kid who was somebody’s daughter first, before she was ever a statistic. Chirawan was one of them.

There’s no “safe” age either. Australian Charity Destiny Rescue’s work spans toddlers to teenagers, because predators don’t target one type of child; they target vulnerability wherever they find it.

Kids are usually lured through:

• False promises (a fake job, a modelling offer, or a “boyfriend” grooming them for a trafficker)
• Family and poverty (sold or hired out by a relative, or entering the industry themselves to feed younger siblings)
• Online grooming (predators building fake identities on social media and dating apps through OSEC, Online Sexual Exploitation of Children), or
• Coercion (shame, threats and debt, rather than physical restraint)

It’s the repeat “sale” of the same child, over and over, that makes this industry so profitable, and so hard to shut down.

And it’s not just overseas.

A five year old girl was rescued from online abuse following the arrest of an Australian man. Predators here are part of this global demand, whether we like admitting it or not.

So who is Destiny Rescue?

Destiny Rescue is a registered Australian charity founded in 2001 by Tony Kirwan, headquartered on the Sunshine Coast, with staff working across seven countries.

Tony didn’t set out to build an international charity. He overheard about a man in Thailand who was once invited to have sex with children, and it hit him so hard he couldn’t carry on with life as normal.

He believes “God put the vision of Destiny Rescue in my heart” that day.

More than two decades on, that moment has grown into an organisation with 250+ staff and volunteers, responsible for over 27,000 rescues and 1,600+ arrests. As Tony puts it, we only have two choices: do nothing, or do something.

Rescue is step one, not the whole story

Every child rescued goes into a Destiny Rescue Freedom Plan™, which covers medical care, trauma-informed counselling, and education or vocational training. Some go into a residential home. 3. The raid – Destiny Rescue leads police directly to the children
4. Rescue and arrest – children are brought to safety, perpetrators taken into custody
