Go into labour on Halloween and you may see your fair share of decorative pumpkins, spiders and ghosts floating around the maternity ward.
But this mum certainly got more “boo” than she bargained for during her Halloween birth when her doctor arrived at the birth suites dressed as the Joker.
Brittany and Justin Selph’s third baby wasn’t due until 5 November, but, as we all know, babies are awful at actually arriving on their due dates. And this little lady was ready to make her grand appearance a week early and on Halloween of all nights.
Dr Joker to the delivery room
The couple hail from Tennessee, America, where Halloween is a pretty big deal. People transform their homes into haunted houses, kids trick-or-treat for hours and adults throw big Halloween bashes, complete with costumes, of course.
One of those Halloween party people happened to be Brittany’s doctor. And the birth of a baby wasn’t going to spoil his sweet costume!
As Justin explains to Little Things.
My wife’s due date was November 5, but she woke up Halloween morning to her water leaking. We went to the hospital around 12:30 p.m. and checked in. Brittany’s doctor came in to meet with us and check things out.
That’s when we found out he was dressed for Halloween that day, as the Joker.”
He came back in to check on her around 4:00 p.m. that afternoon. She again wasn’t ready. So, he said he was going home to pass out candy and change clothes.
My wife said, “Aww, we would hope that you wouldn’t change.”
As Brittany laboured on into the evening, her doctor was in and out, checking on her and still in costume. We’re talking the crazy hair, the token green vest and purple coat, the scary face paint – Dr Joker went ALL out
Forget Batman, Joker saves the day
When Brittany was ready to start the pushing process, Joker returned, still in full costume and ready for the big delivery.
Brittany was ready for delivery at 8:00 p.m., so the nurse called her doctor in, and to our surprise, he showed up in full Joker attire, ready to deliver our baby, Oaklyn.
There my wife is, staring the Joker straight in the eyes while delivering our baby — what a sight! I was holding her leg up and snapping pictures!
The next morning, he came in to check on Brittany, and he said, “Sorry I couldn’t make it in last night. Glad to see the delivery went well.”
Joking, of course.
He also gave her a card of congratulations, and he signed it “Dr. Joker.””
What a fang-tastic Halloween birth story – and story to share on her daughter’s 21st! After all, how many people can say that they were delivered by the Joker? Sure, he may be one of the worst villains in comic book history, but, at least he knows his way around a hospital.
