It’s a Medical Marvel. 74-Year-Old Woman Gives Birth to Twins

Think that once you reach the ripe old age of 74 your nappy changing days are over? Not necessarily!

Indian woman Erramatti Mangayamma has set a mother of a record. She’s given birth to twins at the age of 74.

Erramatti and her husband, Rajarao (aged 80) have finally become first-time parents after 57 years of wedded bliss. But not only are they first-time parents, but they also welcome TWICE the amount of baby wrangling fun with twin girls! Nawwww.

A Long Road To Parenthood

It’s reported that Erramatti and Rajarao had been unable to conceive naturally throughout their marriage. It was only when their 55-year-old neighbour fell pregnant using IVF, that the couple thought to try a little medical intervention to fulfil a dream.

While it’s no doubt controversial for a 74-year-old woman to be considered for IVF, Erramatti (who had already gone through the change of life that is menopause) used donor eggs. It’s believed they were fertilised using husband Rajarao’s sperm and, as luck would have it, they fell pregnant on their first cycle of IVF treatment. AND WITH TWINS! Happy days!

These babies complete me. My six decade-long wait has finally come to an end. Now, no one call me infertile anymore.

A Closely Monitored Geriatric Pregnancy

While Erramatti was said to have had a healthy pregnancy, she was in an Indian hospital for all of it. A geriatric pregnancy in every sense of the term, Erramatti waited out the arrival of their babies under the watchful eye of a medical team. The 74-year-old woman’s doctor, Dr Umashankar, said she had had few problems conceiving or delivering despite her age because she had no medical complications such as diabetes and hypertension. Amazing.

The Twins Are Here!

Given her age, a caesarean birth was imminent for Erramatti, who at 74-years-old delivered twin girls via a caesarean section. She also smashed the world record while doing it. You go girl!

Dr Umashanker reported, “Both mother and the infants are healthy and have no complications whatsoever. However, the mother has been taken to the intensive care unit to come out of the stress she had undergone for the last few hours.” TOTALLY UNDERSTANDABLE.

World Record Smashed!

Not the first older woman to give birth, the Guinness World Record for the world’s oldest new mum title previously went to Spaniard Maria del Carmen Bousada de Lara. Maria delivered twins in December 2006 at the age of 66. We’re pretty sure 74-year-old Erramatti will be wearing that crown for quite some time.
