Do you want to be that fun-loving, apron-wearing, Nigella Lawson-like mum who lovingly bakes gingerbread houses all day long while humming along to Michael Bublé Christmas carols? Same. Am I that mum? No. Do I need ALL the gingerbread house kits and hacks available? ABSOLUTELY. Here are ALL the no-bake cheats we need!
DIY kits, the ultimate sanity, time and money savers
OK hear me out. If you lack the baking gene in your family, or you’re time-poor, or you just simply can not be bothered (and let’s face it, we’re getting to the pointy end of the year where we are just fed up) with making a gingerbread house from scratch, these DIY kits are game-changers.
I’m forever thankful to companies who think of those who still want to provide the fun activity of Christmas house making for the kids (or whole family and friends) but without all the extra work. In most cases, you will just need to grab yourself half of the confectionery aisle at the supermarket for decorating, some piping bags (or zip-lock bags) and make up some royal icing to act as glue. (I’ve included a royal icing recipe down below, it’s EASY. I wouldn’t add it if it weren’t!).

Just in case your cookie or gingerbread house kit doesn’t include a ‘glue’ to stick your pieces together – or if you just need extra for ALL the decorations, royal icing is perfect for the job. Just follow this recipe below!
Ingredients
- 2 cups pure icing sugar, sifted
- 1 large egg white
- ½ teaspoon of water
Method
- In a large bowl, combine the pure icing sugar together with the egg white and water. Mix together with a whisk or spatula until the icing is thickened and smooth. You want the icing to be reasonably thick so it doesn’t drip down, but if it’s too thick to pipe, you can add half a teaspoon of water at a time until you find the right consistency!
There you have it folks, all the gingerbread house kits, chocolate lovers dream real-estate, delicious reindeer and MORE for you all to build and decorate to share (or not!) with family and friends over the festive season, be sure to add it to your line-up of Christmas activities!
