The world of television has lost one of its most compassionate and respected voices. Mel Schilling, the beloved relationship expert and psychologist best known to millions of viewers through Married At First Sight, has passed away at the age of 54 following a courageous battle with cancer.
Her husband, Gareth Brisbane, confirmed the devastating news on Tuesday, 24 March 2026, sharing a heartfelt statement that left fans and colleagues around the world in mourning.

A Journey That Began with Heartbreak and Hope
Mel’s cancer journey began in December 2023, when she was diagnosed with colon cancer after a tumour described as being “the size of a lemon” was discovered during a routine scan. In her characteristic style, she named the tumour “Terry” – a small act of defiance and humour that spoke volumes about the woman she was. The tumour was successfully removed, and Mel was initially given the all-clear, sparking cautious optimism among those who loved her.
That hope was dealt a devastating blow in February 2024, when a routine scan revealed small nodules in her lungs. The cancer had metastasised. Yet even then, Mel did not stop. She continued filming Married At First Sight while quietly undergoing sixteen rounds of chemotherapy – a fact that astonished those around her. Her husband paid tribute to this extraordinary tenacity, noting that through two years of treatment, “when she could barely lift her head from the pillow, she never complained and never stopped showing courage, grace, compassion and empathy, and never missed a day of filming.”
A glimmer of hope appeared when Mel was told she qualified for a groundbreaking clinical trial tailored specifically to her genetic profile, due to begin in March 2026. Her optimism soared once more. But over Christmas, devastating new symptoms emerged — blinding headaches and numbness down the right side of her body. Tests confirmed the worst: the cancer had spread to the left side of her brain. Her oncology team informed her that no further treatment options remained.

“My Light Is Starting to Fade”
In a deeply moving Instagram post shared earlier this month, Mel addressed the world with the same openness and grace that had endeared her to so many.
“My light is starting to fade — and quickly.” “But I am still here, still fighting, and surrounded by the most incredible love.”
She spoke with characteristic generosity, thanking the countless strangers who had sent messages of support throughout her illness, saying their words had “helped shape the mindset I’ve needed to keep fighting.”
In a final act of selflessness, she used her platform not to seek sympathy, but to urge others to take care of their own health.
“If I could leave you with one thing, it would simply be this: if something doesn’t feel right, please get it checked out. It might just save your life.”
A Television Icon Who Changed Lives
Mel Schilling joined Married At First Sight Australia as a relationship expert in 2016, and over 12 seasons became one of the most recognisable and beloved figures the franchise had ever seen. Her straight-talking, deeply empathetic approach resonated with viewers across Australia and, from 2021, in the United Kingdom, where she joined the Channel 4 edition alongside Paul C Brunson and Charlene Douglas. Over five UK series, she became, as Channel 4 put it, “a hugely valued and much-loved part of the Channel 4 family.”
Channel 4 paid tribute to her in glowing terms: “Her wisdom, warmth, humour and kindness shine through, and these qualities mean that everyone involved in MAFS, from the producers and contributors, to the viewers, love and respect her as much as we do.”
Her colleague and friend John Aiken, who stepped in to cover Mel’s role during the current UK series at her own request, is among the many who will feel her absence profoundly.

“Live Life to the Full”
Gareth Brisbane’s tribute to his wife was as poignant as it was beautiful. He described her as a woman who “became a new mum and a TV star at 42 – and nailed both.”
To the public, she was the matriarch of MAFS and a queen of reality television. To him and to their daughter Maddie, she was simply “our wee Melsie” – an incredible mum, a role model, and a soulmate.
He concluded his tribute with the message he believed Mel would most want the world to carry forward:
“Life can be beautiful, and life can be incredibly cruel. But ultimately, life is fleeting, fragile, and tomorrow is promised to no one. If you can do anything to honour Mel, please live life to the full, love your people well, and try not to sweat the small stuff.”
Mel leaves behind her husband Gareth and 10-year-old daughter Maddie. What makes it particularly poignant is how hard-won Maddie was. Mel had her daughter comparatively late in life at 42, and had previously suffered a heartbreaking miscarriage when she was 40. She and Gareth later went through IVF to have Maddie.
Mel clearly adored her daughter, once saying: “We’re both very much performers, and she’s a natural in front of the camera.” And of course, in Mel’s final moments, even when cancer appeared to have taken her ability to speak, her only thought was to whisper a private message for Maddie and Gareth.
. She will be remembered not only for the guidance she offered to couples navigating the most vulnerable moments of their lives on screen, but for the extraordinary courage, grace, and love she showed in her own.
Rest in peace, Melsie.
