Mum Practices Smiling for School Photos with Son … and the Result? Brilliant!

School Photos Day is a big event, especially for pre-schoolers who are just starting to experience the thrill of getting their photo taken. For many parents, it’s a rite of passage filled with excitement and a hint of anxiety.

When it was my youngest’s pre-school photos day, I helped them pick out a cute outfit, styled their hair the way they asked, and sent them on their way. About two hours later, I got a phone call saying I had to come to the school. My poor babe had a meltdown, and the pictures are a stark reminder of this due to their red-rimmed, puffy eyes. But in thirty-nine/forty-two years (combined) of school photos, I’ve never experienced what Vially Dorestant did with her son Corey.

Kids Are Gonna Kid – School Photos Day Prep

Like many parents, Corey’s mum sent him to pre-school ready for his big photo moment. She was hoping for a cute, smiley picture, but when the photos came back, she was shocked—in a good way!

In a video shared on her Instagram, Dorestant shows how she preps her son, Corey, for his big picture day at pre-school, which was happening the next week.

“Are you gonna smile?” she asks. Corey enthusiastically responds, “Yes!” and flashes an adorable grin.

To make sure, Dorestant asks, “Is that how you’re gonna smile?” Corey, still smiling, says, “Yes!”

Following the magic rule of threes, she asks one more time, “When they say ‘cheese,’ what are you gonna do?” Corey gives a big “cheeeeeese” with a toothy grin, leaving Dorestant feeling confident that he’ll nail it on picture day.

Take a look below, it’s only 20 seconds and we’re sure it’ll make you laugh!

A Picture Day Gone Viral

When Dorestant saw the pictures, she saw Corey posing with what can only be described as swagger. In a pose worthy of an album or magazine cover, Corey stands with one hand in his pocket, an intense gaze in his eyes, and holding his chin with the other.

Dorestant said she wanted to practice with Corey because he gets shy sometimes.

“He tends to get shy and freeze up around others,” she said. “Since this was his first picture day at a new school, I wanted to ensure he felt comfortable and confident.”

The Power of a Good Surprise

People loved Corey’s pose and flocked to the Instagram post to comment.

A Life Lesson

Corey’s picture shows us sometimes the best moments happen when things don’t go as planned. Instead of getting upset about the unexpected, it’s great to laugh and enjoy it. Corey’s photo is a perfect example of how embracing the silly and surprising moments can bring joy to everyone.

As Dorestant says, “As parents, we often feel the need to shield our kids and prepare them for the world, which can make us anxious about their readiness, but we need to trust in their abilities and give them the space to shine on their own.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself.

In the end, Corey’s school photos aren’t just a funny anecdote; it’s a celebration of individuality and the joy that comes from embracing life’s little surprises. So next School Photos Day, don’t stress too much about getting the perfect shot. Instead, enjoy the process, and who knows, you might end up with a memorable photo that brings a smile to everyone’s face, just like Corey’s did. And something you can keep for their eighteenth birthday!
