Ugh. Tampons. After having kids, I’ve discovered how much I dislike them. Pads aren’t much better but what other options do we have?

Enter the DivaCup®, an eco-friendly alternative to controlling your monthly mate with less hassle, no fuss, no leakage concerns, and best of all – no plastic waste. Sounds like a dream!

A better period experience with a DivaCup Menstrual Cup

You may have heard about the DivaCup before but have been unsure how it works.

  • Is it hard to put in?
  • Is it easy to clean?
  • Can I wear it all day?
  • Can I exercise with it?
  • Can I swim?
  • Can I use it while I sleep?

I’d been curious about menstrual cups for quite some time and read reviews from women who had said it was an absolute game-changer for their monthly period.  So, we decided to investigate.

DID YOU KNOW: More than 45 billion tampons or sanitary pads are used every year across the globe resulting in 3.2 million kgs of waste?! Shocking for something we don’t get a choice in.

But what we do get a choice in is how we manage our monthly period, and with the typical Australian woman using over 16,800 tampons or sanitary napkins in her lifetime, I say now’s the time to look for alternatives.

So we approached DivaCup and suggested we reach out to the mums of Australia to trial them with us.  And they agreed.  So our selected mums had never used a menstrual cup before, and trialled  the DivaCup menstrual cup for three cycles,  letting us know their honest opinions.  We knew it wasn’t going to be for everyone, but maybe … just maybe it’ll change the way we look at our period and the way we deal with them.

So if you’re considering a menstrual cup, or even slightly curious, take a listen to what real Aussie mums had to say and read our review below.

Get to know DivaCup

If you’re not familiar with DivaCup, let us introduce you!  DivaCup is a reusable menstrual cup that is quickly changing the way we manage our periods.

Instead of using tampons and pads at period time, I’ve switched to using a DivaCup menstrual cup, made from high grade silicone, which I’ll add is totally reusable (so you pay once and keep on using!)

In a nutshell, DivaCup makes us feel confident to find a fresh alternative to the outdated tampons and pads we’ve grown up with and allows us to easily get on with our days without our periods holding us back.

Below are just a few things that really stand out about DivaCup. You can find out more about the DivaCup in our introductory story.

What we loved

  • Reusable. Simply wear it, clean it, reuse it period after period after period. It’s a really affordable pricepoint so the DivaCup pays for itself after one or two cycles, depending on how many products you go through.
  • Wear it for 8 hours at a time. To bed, to the beach, anywhere.
  • Suitable for all ages and period types. There are three models (0, 1 and 2) for light, medium, and heavy menstrual flow. For us mums, model 1 or 2 is recommended.
  • Easy to insert, once you get the hang of it. There are various insertion methods too so you can find one that works for you.
  • Collects rather than absorbs the flow, before it can make its way to your undies.
  • Made of 100% medical-grade silicone. No added chemicals, latex, dyes, rubber, plastic or BPA and it won’t disrupt the vaginal environment or pH.
  • Best of all, you won’t even know it’s there! Insert, do your thang, remove, clean, repeat. Easy as pie.

What our reviewers had to say:

DivaCup was so so easy to remove and empty, definitely less scary and messy then I thought it would be!

I went for a run and did a strength training work out and I not once had to worry about it leaking. It didn’t throw off my PH balance like pads and tampons do so no itching after and during my period. And I couldn’t even feel it!” – Grace

It was very easy and quick to get the hang of both insertion and removal. I took it out 1-2 times a day and often cleaned it in the shower.

I enjoyed not having to worry about changing pads or tampons as regularly and how environmentally friendly the concept of a menstrual cup is.” – Elizabeth\

I find the DivaCup really comfortable! I sometimes forget it’s there and love that I’m avoiding those unnecessary toxins.” – Sarah

It is very convenient to have the DivaCup in the cupboard especially during this uncertain time! No worries about the lack of stocks in the feminine products department.”– Lisa

I took to it like a duck to water. The first cycle I changed it every 2 hours to track my cycle and learn how often to change it, now I’m able to change it morning and evening and no leakage.” – Tamneariha

{Insertion] was actually easier than I expected. Once you got the hang of twisting and slight tug to create suction it worked a treat.

I went 8 hours in the daytime without changing and on a heavy flow day. I could never do that with a tampon or pad!! That was the gamechanging moment.”– Bel
