More and more parents who are becoming grandparents are opting to choose their own title for this super prestigious role. In fact, according to a recent survey by Preply, unique grandparent names are becoming more and more popular.

Unique grandparent names: Grannie and Gramps are on the out!

I remember when one of my friends announced she was going to be a grandmother. She had just turned 50 and she absolutely, in no way, shape or form mentioned the word ‘grandmother.’  Instead, she announced her son was having a baby and that she would be the baby’s ‘Glamma’. After all, there was already a Grandmother in the family. Two of them actually, both in their 90s and both in a very different phase of life to what my friend was. She simply couldn’t identify as a Grandmother, or a Nana, or a Grannie.

So she didn’t. She went with Glamma, and she’s the coolest Glamma I know.

Cool names for modern grandparents

In addition to the 12 grandparent names listed above, we’ve come up with a few more cool names that you might prefer, when the time comes to take on this title.

Looking for Repetitive Names?

Nana, Papa, Gigi, Mimi, BiBi  -there’s a bit of a trend here when it comes to repetitive names for grandparents. Of course, this is also the case for Mum and Dad (Mama and Dada) and it all comes down to how our little ones learn to speak.

Some other repetitive names to consider:

  1. BamBam
  2. CeeCee
  3. GaGa
  4. LaLa
  5. GanGan
  6. MeeMee
  7. MayMay
  8. BonBon
  9. PupPup
  10. PopPop

For the Fancy Grancys

When you’re far too fancy for Grandma, then here are some trendy choices that are anything but old.

  1. VeeVoo – Okay, so it kind of sounds like a name for a Vagina, but, it could also be a funky grandma name.
  2. Nanzie
  3. Boomer
  4. Popzie
  5. G-Ma
  6. G-Pa
  7. Glampie
  8. Glammie

For the Playful Grandparents

These cool names for grandparents cement your place in the fun zone, for life. Never will you be associated with “old person smell” or have your grandkids remember you because of the ugly ass carpeting in your lounge room.

Oh no – you’ll be remembered as the cool old bird who gave them ice cream for brekkie and can tell them stories of a time when Tay-Tay was a country singer.

  1. Lollie
  2. Lola
  3. Ammie – This is actually the Icelandic word for Grandma
  4. Amma
  5. Sassy
  6. Queenie
  7. Bubbles
  8. Birdie
  9. Teenie

Choosing your Grannie title

Of course, you may want to stick to something traditional or go with a unique grandparent name that reflects your culture such as Daddi and Daada (Hindi), Tita and Tito (Hispanic) or Nonna and Nonno (Italy).

Or, you may want to go with something completely out there like Bob.

Many grandparents also go by their first names, like Nana Sara and Papa James.

One of the hardest things about selecting your grandparent moniker is that you need the parents (your kids) to kind of agree to it. At first, when my mate said she’d be Glamma, her daughter-in-law was horrified. But, over time, she got used to it and accepted that Glamma was here to stay. And slay.

What do your kids call your parents? And what grandparent name will you be going with? A traditional option or a unique grandparent name? Let us know in the comments!
