There’s a moment on Christmas morning, usually somewhere around 5.30am, when a small person spots the pile under the tree and the entire house is suddenly, aggressively awake. That’s the moment we’re shopping for.
Picking Christmas gifts for kids in the little years is harder than it looks. They’re old enough to have strong opinions, but young enough that the box might still beat whatever came in it. So we’ve done the legwork and rounded up Christmas gift ideas for kids aged 2 to 6 that cover different interests and budgets, from dress-ups under $10 to a full backyard water play station.
All you need to do is choose, wrap, and find a hiding spot they won’t sniff out before the big day. (Good luck with that last bit.)

9 Best Christmas Gift Ideas for Kids Aged 2 to 6
Step2 Pump & Splash Discovery Stone Pond
RRP: $319
WHERE TO BUY: Step2 Direct
If you’re after outdoor Christmas gifts for kids that can handle an Aussie summer, this one’s built for it.Christmas in Australia means heat, and this one’s built for it. The Step2 Pump & Splash Discovery Stone Pond has a child-activated pump that sends water flowing through three separate play areas, so the kids do the work and you get to sit down for once.
Little water babies can trigger a waterfall shower, tip water out of the fill-and-spill bucket, or pour it into the funnel to set off the spinner and lazy river. There’s also a ground-level pond for littlies who’d rather sit and dangle their toes. And because there’s so much going on at once, siblings can play together without a full-blown turf war. Mostly.
It’s made with Step2’s EverTough construction, so it’s built for outdoor play, and it wipes clean with household cleaners or disinfectant wipes. The basin holds up to 41 litres, while the pond base measures 101.6cm x 76.2cm, so check your patch of lawn first. Parental supervision is required during water play.

Great Pretenders Costumes & Accessories
RRP: $9.95 – $79.95
WHERE TO BUY: Great Pretenders
If your house already has a resident fairy, dinosaur or superhero, you’ll know how seriously little kids take dress-ups. Great Pretenders makes costumes and accessories for exactly this crowd, from fluttering butterflies and magical fairies to dragons and all sorts of make-believe characters in between. Kids pick a costume, invent a character and run with it.
For kids aged 2 to 5, dressing up is a big part of pretend play. It’s where they make up stories, try out different roles and build their own little worlds. One day they’re a fairy, the next they’re a fierce dragon guarding the lounge room. Don’t ask the dragon to pack up the Lego.
What we love is that Great Pretenders keeps the focus on open-ended play rather than licensed characters, so the story belongs to your kid. The range is thoughtfully designed and made to be played with again and again, …whether it’s an everyday dress-up or a Christmas morning surprise, which makes it one of the most versatile Christmas gifts for kids on this list.
SmartyPals Magnetic Playwall
RRP: $89
WHERE TO BUY: SmartyPals
Need a spot for the kids to draw, stick, create and generally get busy that isn’t your freshly painted wall? The SmartyPals Magnetic Playwall turns an everyday wall or surface into a dedicated play space. Add magnetic activities, washable dustless crayons or compatible tiles, and let them get stuck into some screen-free play.
The best bit is that it grows with your kids. Swap out the magnets and activities to introduce letters, numbers, shapes, routines, emotions or pretend play, so there’s always something new to explore and it doesn’t get boring by February. It also gives little ones somewhere to play independently while they make up their own games, which might just buy you a hot coffee.
It’s a particularly handy pick if you don’t have room for another bulky toy. The renter-friendly wall decal creates a reusable activity space without taking over the living room, and families can add to the collection over time rather than replacing the whole thing.

ergoPouch Short Sleeve Pyjamas
RRP: $24.95
WHERE TO BUY: ergoPouch
If Christmas Eve pyjamas are a tradition in your house, here’s a pair that’ll keep earning their keep long after the tree comes down. Toilet training, asserting independence and learning to get dressed can all make bedtime a little more complicated, and these help.
ergoPouch’s Short Sleeve Pyjamas have a separate top and bottom, making them easier for toddlers and preschoolers to pull on and off themselves while they’re learning the ropes. They’re made from stretchy organic jersey cotton, so they’re soft, breathable and comfy enough for sleep on warm Aussie nights. The slim-fit design means they can go underneath a Pouch when an extra layer is needed, or be worn on their own when it’s sticky.
The two-piece design also comes into its own for those middle-of-the-night toilet trips, with no wrestling a full-body sleepsuit at 2am. A great addition to the bedtime drawer for kids who are toilet training, self-dressing or simply ready to graduate from one-piece pyjamas. By far these are one of our favourite practical Christmas gifts for little kids, and you can see why!
The Low Tox Project Stainless Steel Car Plate with Suction
RRP: $33
WHERE TO BUY: The Low Tox Project
Getting a toddler to eat dinner can feel like a competitive sport. This car-shaped plate from The Low Tox Project at least makes it a fun one. It has four deep compartments to keep different foods separate (non-negotiable for some little diners), plus a silicone suction base to keep the plate where it belongs, rather than halfway across the table mid-dinner.
It’s made from food-safe 18/8 (304) grade uncoated stainless steel with an LFGB grade silicone base, so it’s sturdy enough for everyday family meals. It’s also dishwasher-safe and generously sized, with room for breakfast, snacks, lunch and dinner without everything piling up together.
The playful design makes it a fun Christmas gift for little foodies, while the practical details mean it won’t be banished to the back of the cupboard come January. The Low Tox Project designed it for everyday family use, so it’ll keep going well beyond the toddler years.

EDUBEBO Height Adjustable Kids Kitchen Toy Set
RRP: $229.99
WHERE TO BUY: Amazon
Got a little one who follows you around the kitchen “helping”? Give them a kitchen of their own. This pink wooden play kitchen from EDUBEBO comes with kitchen accessories included, so they can cook dinner, serve meals and run their own restaurant straight out of the box on Christmas morning.
The bench has three adjustable heights, making it suitable for children aged 3 to 8. As they grow, you simply raise it to suit them, so they won’t be stuck kneeling on the floor to reach the stovetop, and you won’t be buying another one in two years. It’s made from wood and has an anti-tip design for added stability when play gets enthusiastic.
There’s plenty of scope for playing together, too. One child is the chef, another takes orders, and someone has to be the demanding customer who sends the plastic pasta back. Whether they’re serving an imaginary feast or cooking for their favourite toys, it’s hours of make-believe.
OROMVO 7-in-1 Wooden Climbing Toys Set
RRP: $138.89
WHERE TO BUY: Amazon
Got a little climber who’s forever scaling the couch or treating the furniture as their personal obstacle course? This rainbow climbing set from OROMVO brings the action indoors, with a wooden climbing triangle, reversible ramp and rocking arch that can be arranged in seven different ways.
The ramp doubles as a slide or a climbing surface, while the arch flips over to become a rocker. The ramp also features safety rails, and all the wooden pieces have smooth, polished surfaces. Bright rainbow colours add a cheerful touch to a play corner, and the different setups keep things interesting for kids who get bored quickly.
When playtime’s over, the climbing triangle folds away to save space, which is handy when your living room needs to become a living room again. Just know it requires assembly, so set aside some time before the kids can get climbing, sliding and rocking. Maybe not 11pm on Christmas Eve.
Crayola Goo All-In-1 Unicorn Sensory Station
RRP: $39.99
WHERE TO BUY: Toymate
If you’ve got a kid who loves slime, glitter and anything gloriously gooey, the Crayola Goo All-In-1 Unicorn Sensory Station is going to get their attention. This unicorn-themed kit comes with goo powders, glitter glue, mix-ins and washable markers, giving them plenty of ways to create their own colourful, sparkly slime.
There’s a bit of mixing involved, but the easy-to-use formula just calls for shaking and stirring to get the slime ready. Kids can experiment with different colours, textures and add-ins, then pop their finished creations into the unicorn-shaped display container. Mini cups and a measuring scoop are included too, so they have all the bits and pieces they need to get started.
Designed for kids aged 6 and up, it’s a hands-on activity that mixes creativity with sensory play, and a great pick for the oldest in the little-kid crew. Fair warning: once they’ve made their first batch, slime will become a regular request.
KRIDDO Toddler Tricycle
RRP: $88.88
WHERE TO BUY: Amazon
For toddlers who want to go everywhere, fast, the KRIDDO Toddler Tricycle gives them their own set of wheels to cruise around on. Designed for children aged 2 to 5, it has a sturdy frame, a comfy seat and a bright finish for little riders ready to take their first laps of the backyard.
The trike features an extended triangular base and wider rear wheel placement to help reduce the risk of tipping while kids are learning to ride. Non-slip handle grips give small hands a better hold, while the quiet EVA and PU wheels are designed for indoor and outdoor use without scratching your floors.
Whether they’re cruising the footpath, exploring the backyard or doing laps of the hallway on a rainy day, it’s a great way for toddlers to practise steering and build their riding confidence. It’s suitable for kids up to around 20kg, and adult supervision is recommended during use.
The best Christmas gifts for kids are the ones that get an immediate squeal of excitement and keep them busy well beyond Christmas morning. Whether you’re shopping for your own kids or ticking off the nieces, nephews, grandkids and family friends, these picks are ready to make their way under the tree. Now go hide them somewhere better than the top of the wardrobe. They know.
