Move over Heinz, today we show you how to make your very own homemade tomato sauce (or ketchup, for our American readers. It’s easy as pie! And speaking of pie, you’ll have your very own condiment to go with it. Trust us, it’ll taste 10 times better.

You will need a slow cooker for this, but if you have one, it’ll be the easiest thing you’ve ever made in it. You can store the tomato sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 10 days or in the freezer for up to 2 months.

What You’ll Need:

1 x 400g can crushed tomatoes
1/2 small white onion, finely chopped
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
2 teaspoons salt (or to taste, if you want it to taste like it’s from the packet, load up on the salt!)
1 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Pinch ground allspice

  1. Place all the ingredients in the slow cooker and stir to combine.
  2. Set the slow cooker to low and cook uncovered until the tomato sauce has reduced and thickened, for up to 5 hours.
  3. Using a hand blender, purée the tomato sauce to your desired consistency.
  4. Transfer the tomato sauce to resealable jars or other containers. Cool completely, then seal and refrigerate.
