EVERY. SINGLE. NIGHT I’m asked the same question by hubby and the kids – “What’s for tea Mum?” and guess what, EVERY. SINGLE. NIGHT my reply is the same, “Ummmm, yeah….?”
My dinner-planning motivation is currently at zero, partly thanks to my often fussy eater. There’s also the fact that at the end of a long day, the last thing I want to think of doing is come up with a delicious and different dinner idea.
Recently, I decided to take action and put an end to the dinner guesswork and the supermarket shopping chaos that often goes with it. Instead, I ordered a HelloFresh meal kit for the very first time.
So, if you too are tired of the constant ‘what’s for dinner’ dilemma, have a fussy eater on your hands or simply want some dinnertime inspo, come and discover what HelloFresh is all about.
Here’s your chance to see EXACTLY what’s in a HelloFresh box and what my somewhat fussy family thought of one of Australia’s favourite and most popular meal subscription services!
What exactly is HelloFresh?
HelloFresh is the ultimate meal kit subscription service – fresh, seasonal, pre-portioned ingredients are delivered right to your door, weekly, complete with their own easy-to-follow recipe cards. That’s right, it’s a double whammy when it comes to convenience. There’s no need to wander to the shopping centre with kids in tow. Plus, there’s no food wastage to deal with at the end of the week. Each meal kit is packed just right with fresh, quality ingredients.
What’s more, you can easily customise your weekly menu too. Just head to the HelloFresh website or the handy app, and cast your eye over the wide range of recipes (including vegetarian options!). Be warned though, from the schnitzel and the meatballs to the tacos and curries – they ALL look super delicious. Also, the recipes change week to week to keep dinners really interesting without too much effort on your part, plus they have family-friendly boxes with meals the kids are likely to eat too! #bonus
Next up, choose a plan that suits you. HelloFresh offers three plans – Veggie, Classic and Family. Once chosen, just select how many people you’re feeding and how many meals you need for the week. You can pick either 3, 4 or 5 meal kits for 2 or 4 people or 4-5 people on the Family plan (i.e. 2 adults and 2-3 young kids) #winning
TIP: If you have fussy eaters, involve them in picking out a meal they’d like the family to try.
HelloFresh is at the door!
I had three HelloFresh meal kits for a family of four delivered. I’ll admit that I’m a little nervous due to the fact I do have a fussy eater to feed. He’s the kind of fussy eater who enjoys the same old favourite meals, so much so that I find myself taking short order dinner requests just for him every night. This is equally annoying as it is time-consuming.
However, the HelloFresh website mentions that the family plan is great for fussy eaters, which puts my mind at ease a bit and, if I’m honest, leaves me feeling a tad excited.
FUSSY EATER FACT #1: I’m not the only one who is dealing with a picky eater! A recent survey by HelloFresh reveals 85% of parents cook the same meals regularly because they know the meals will get eaten. #guiltyascharged
Meal planning is DONE and it feels sooooo good!
I can’t even begin to explain how relieved I am of the ‘mental load’ by not having to worry about what’s for dinner. How good is it to know that no matter what happens during the day, when you have HelloFresh in your fridge, everyone will be fed a yummy, healthy and nutritious home-cooked meal at the end of the day. #winningatdomesticgoddesslife
FUSSY EATER FACT #2: 40% of parents surveyed by HelloFresh somewhat agreed that they worry a lot that their kids are not getting the appropriate nutrients for health and wellbeing.
HelloFresh meal kits and recipe cards
Most importantly, with HelloFresh it doesn’t matter if you’re not Nigella Lawson. Even the most amateur of cooks can whip up a HelloFresh meal kit with ease.
Easy-to-follow recipe cards (complete with pictures) make every HelloFresh cooking session stress-free. Just follow the card; everything you need to know is RIGHT THERE. Also, there are six photographed steps to follow, plus tips for adjusting the meal for fussy eaters (less spice, more sauce – that kind of thing), which is super handy. The recipe image also shows you how to plate for the little ones.
The meal kits are bagged separately and nearly everything is included – with the exception of basic pantry items like milk, oil, pepper or soy sauce.
PRO TIP: The colour of the recipe card matches the colour of the sticker on the meal kits. Clever.
Apron on, let’s get on with the cooking!
HelloFresh meal kits put to the test
RECIPE: Vietnamese Style Pork Tacos
SERVES: 4-5 PEOPLE
TIME: 30 MINUTES
YUM RATING: 10/10
FIRST IMPRESSIONS: To be fair, anything wrapped in a tortilla is going to be a winner, but this Vietnamese-Style Pork Taco recipe takes the trophy for deliciousness. Full of flavour and plenty of salad crunch, we’re all happy diners.
My kid (yes, the fussy one!) does say he thinks the cos lettuce is “weird“, but I forgive his Iceberg-lettuce-loving-heart when he tries it anyway. As a result, I give myself my best Matt Preston nod and a pat on the back for creating a delicious (and different) dinner.
- Olive oil (pantry item)
- 1 brown onion
- 4 cloves garlic
- 1 bunch of mint
- 1 head of cos lettuce
- 100g snow peas
- 1 lemon
- 1 carrot
- Long red chilli (optional)
- 100g garlic aioli
- 500g pork mince
- 75g kecap manis
- 2 tbs soy sauce (pantry item)
- 12 mini flour tortillas
- GET PREPPED. Finely chop the garlic (or use a garlic press). Finely chop the brown onion. Pick and roughly chop the mint leaves. Shred the cos lettuce. Trim the snow peas, then thinly slice into matchsticks. Zest the lemon to get a generous pinch of zest. Grate the carrot (unpeeled). Thinly slice the long red chilli (if using).
- MAKE THE LEMON AIOLI. Juice the lemon to get 2 tsp of juice. In a small bowl, combine the garlic aioli and lemon juice. FUSSY TIP: Leave some of the garlic aioli plain for the kids if you like! Taste and add more lemon juice if needed. Season with salt and pepper. Mix well to combine and set aside.
- COOK THE VEGGIES. Heat a large frying pan over medium-high heat with a drizzle of olive oil. When the oil is hot, add the onion, carrot, garlic and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring until slightly softened, 2-3 minutes.
- COOK THE PORK. Increase the heat to high. Add the pork mince to the frying pan and cook, breaking up with a spoon until just browned, 3-4 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and add the kecap manis, soy sauce and lemon zest. Stir until combined, 1 minute. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
- HEAT THE TORTILLAS. Heat the mini flour tortillas in a sandwich press or on a plate in the microwave for 10-second bursts, until warmed through.
- SERVE UP. Bring everything to the table to serve. Spread a thin layer of lemon aioli over a tortilla. Add a helping of cos lettuce, snow peas, and the Vietnamese-style pork. Top the adults’ portions with the mint and chilli (if using). Enjoy!

Mexican Beef & Bean Rice Bowls
SERVES: 4-5 PEOPLE
TIME: 45 MINUTES
YUM RATING: 10/10
FIRST IMPRESSIONS: I’m pretty excited about the Mexican Beef and Bean Rice Bowl recipe to be honest. We love Mexican food and this dinner has a definite Tex-Mex vibe. The beef is packed with sneaky veggies (zucchini, carrot, capsicum and onion, oh my!) and bulked out with red kidney beans. Love, love, love the addition of charred corn – it’s SUPER easy to cook and fussy eaters can’t resist digging a fork into those sweet and juicy kernels. #getinmybelly
Creamy Honey Mustard Chicken
SERVES: 4-5 PEOPLE
TIME: 40 MINUTES
YUM RATING: 8/10
FIRST IMPRESSIONS: I saved the Creamy Honey Mustard Chicken (with herby mash and steamed veggies) recipe until last because, let’s be honest, vegetable consumption in my house can be a little bit of a struggle. The beans aren’t such a big hit for two of the family, however, when rolled in the sauce, they’re reported as “not as bad” (insert my eye-roll here). Kudos to HelloFresh for using thigh meat in this recipe instead of the popular breast, it’s beautifully tender and full of flavour.
What does my family think about HelloFresh?
Honestly, we love it. The HelloFresh family meals are REALLY fussy-eater and kid-friendly. The flavours are beautiful and there was nothing to provoke a flat out refusal of “nup, not eating it“. My husband loved the variety of HEALTHY meals and my fussy eater ate everything that was offered, with the exception of all the beans. Hey, still a win in my book! As for me, I loved knowing that a fresh, quick dinner was sorted and ready to be cooked – without any brain strain on my part.
With each of the recipes in my HelloFresh box, I had dinner on the table in around 40 minutes (even quicker when I could multi-task). Which, considering I had to put absolutely no thought into it, is pretty darn good! Other nights when cooking an unplanned dinner it inevitably starts with a rummage through the fridge and freezer, a trip to the shop for missing items, then home again to cook. Before I know it, an hour has passed and I’m only just getting dinner on the table.
HelloFresh delivery is fast and lands right on your doorstep. The meal kits are packed really well (so the ingredients stay fresh) and the quality is fab. There’s no sacrificing of quality or freshness. The recipe cards are easy to follow and I’ll be keeping them for future reference too because we plan to keep recooking our favourites now we know they go down a treat and are easy to make. Without a doubt, those tacos are a new family favourite.
Finally, I love that it’s a flexible subscription service. With no lock-in plans, you can order HelloFresh when it suits you. After all, only you know when you’ll need it the most — school holidays for instance or when you have an extra busy working week! In short, I could sing HelloFresh praises all day long. And you can bet your last pork taco I will most definitely be ordering again!
FUSSY EATER FACT #3: On average we cook 6,570 dinners for our families over the course of 18 years. However, three in four Aussie parents are cooking more than one dinner per night.
Get Your HelloFresh Dinner In The Bag Too!
Want dinnertimes sorted so you can sit back with a smug domestic-goddess smile on your face? I highly recommend you head on over to the HelloFresh website and choose your plan. Not only are healthy and delicious meals a definite, but it’ll also take you less time to place your order than it takes to write a shopping list and wrestle your supermarket bags.
Don’t forget to involve the kids in choosing the meals; you might be surprised by what they’re willing to try. Better yet, they can help out in the kitchen too. Plus, don’t let your non-cooking partner off the hook either – remember, the recipe cards are a cinch to follow. It’s life-skill learning for all!
