If my sons could NEVER brush their teeth again, they would be happy. Twice a day, every day I nag encourage them to brush their chompers. Once before we leave for school and once before bed.

Sometimes I don’t nag encourage and then when I’m saying goodbye or tucking them in ask ‘did you brush your teeth?’ And the answer is always one of two:

“Yes” which could be either the truth or a lie on any given day OR “You didn’t tell me to”

I have been nagging encouraging them for eight and six years respectively and it’s STILL my fault if they choose not to without my prompting.

Are you feeling my pain yet? Or are you in your own world of pain? If you are, we’re not alone A recent study conducted by Philips Sonicare indicated that 32% of mums said their children only brush for up to one minute and 25% only brush once a day – concerning percentages for the dental profession, particularly when tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease.

Well, things are changing around these parts. We now have a Philips Sonicare electric toothbrush in the house and all of a sudden my boys are keen as mustard to brush their teeth.

Removing more than 75% of plaque than manual toothbrushes is reason enough to try it out and let’s just say the proof was in the pudding!

We downloaded the Brush Busters app and they signed up to both the characters. Stefan [8yo] has teamed up with Bjorn the Viking and Nathan [10yo] has teamed up with Vicky the Vampire.

And here’s where things get interesting.

My boys have been brushing their teeth independently for a couple of years now and do the obligatory minty breath in Mum’s face as proof of such. But for the purposes of this review, I have been standing in the bathroom with them while they are brushing and I have discovered the most disturbing thing. My kids don’t know how to brush their teeth properly. Even though I was sure I had taught them.

Dr. David Dunn, principal dentist at The Macquarie Street Centre, Sydney says “It’s important to maintain a good oral health regime at all times. When we disregard it, plaque and bacteria cause damage to our teeth, gums, and supporting bone around the teeth. Therefore, it’s extremely important, especially as a parent, that we not only look after ourselves properly but also set a good example for the younger generation to take care of our oral health, both personally and with professional care.”

So we’ve gone back to basics, thanks to the Sonicare. We set the phone up on the bathroom counter and start the app which tells the boys where to brush and for how long to kill all the harmful bacteria in that space. And they’re actually doing it!! Even the ten year old. I am genuinely surprised. And incredibly pleased.

Check them out! They’re actually watching the app to see where they need to brush next! Oh and get this. They tell ME it’s time to brush their teeth. Which has to be the BEST review of all.

The app also senses IF they stop brushing (watch the video below to see how!) so this puts an end to sneaky brushing escapades.

The flexibility to grow with your child, two different speeds and brush heads. Not to mention the way it eases them into the 2 minute regime over a 90 day period!

  5. I love the idea of the app with timer as our biggest problem is the 10 second brush! I’m forever telling my little cherubs to go back and keep brushing (I usually let them brush before I finish it off for them)…

  6. Great for my daughter who pretends to brush her teeth, she will actually use the sonicare electric brush for kids

I’ve been looking for a decent kids branded electric tooth brush with a timer, great to see a cool looking one. Thanks

  16. I love the fact that it knows when the child has stopped brushing, as my son is nitrous for just rubbing toothpaste on his teeth so he gets the fresh mint smell without having to brush.

  17. Karyn Tolson Reply

Something the kids will enjoy and can learn from just what I have been looking for

  52. Vanessa Ahern Reply

My favourite feature of the Phillips Sonicare Electric Toothbrush is the KidPacer delivering sounds to help keep my son brushing for the full 2 minutes as he continually stops and gets distracted.

  53. Probably the best idea is the Kids Timer with Music as it encourges children to take the time to clean thier teeth properly. It also removes most of plaque that wouldn’t be removed by a manual one. They will be more inclined to clean their teeth using the correct method too – in a circular pattern, not sideways as most people do that is more abrasive on the surface of your teeth. I had this explained to me by a Dentist, and a couple of weeks by a Dental Hygienist.

  54. Kate Slack Reply

The KidPacer so that kids are encouraged to brush their teeth for longer, my daughter never does hers long enough so this would be a great tool for her.

  55. Deborah Osborne Reply

I have the adult Phillips sonicare toothbrush. The very best toothbrush I have ever used. When I clean my teeth, they feel like I’ve just been to the dentist. The kid timer will be great. The adult brush has a timer as well, when I started using it, I was shocked how long it took for the two minutes to run out, and realised even though I thought I had been brushing for two minutes, I wasn’t at all. Anyone using this toothbrush will be really happy with it, I’m sure.

  57. Anne-Marie Wingfield Reply

I Love that its super kid friendly with the characters and app and would definitely make my kids remember to brush their teeth.

  58. I love how this awesome gadget makes brushing teeth for kids a fun experience, not to mention does a far superior job than a regular old toothbrush would. Win win! 🙂

  59. It’s quirky designs and ease of use makes kids want to run to the bathroom to clean their teeth! You can even combine story time and cleaning teeth into a fun activity using the characters on the toothbrush as props and ideas for stories!

  60. Best bit about this brush is the fun musical tunes that help to encourage regular brushing. My six kids would love to try one.

  61. They encourage the kids to brush as they are something new to try

  62. Mel Cochrane-Finlay Reply

Encourage kids to brush for longer than 30 seconds for sure!

  63. Rosemarie De Bari Reply

My daughters are very very fussy about teeth brushing. No amount of nagging seems to make them take it seriously. They LOVE playing with my phone, which would make the app a winner in our house. Plus if it helps them learn how to brush their teeth properly (and get right to the back teeth!) that would also be an added bonus.

  64. This would entice my son to brush his teeth without the nagging every day.

  65. I understand the pain, i would love to get my son to brush his teeth rather than just swallow toothpaste to say at least my breath smells good, cause its in my tummy!

  66. Great idea! Aything to get them to spend a bit longer and actually think about it is a fantastic idea!

  67. I love that it makes teeth brushing fun – they can decorate the stand and make it “theirs” plus the timed vibration and reminder notes to change are fantastic…..making teeth brushing a totally independent activity – giving them onus.
