Tesla has issued a recall for almost 35,000 vehicles due to a significant manufacturing defect involving the bonnet latch assembly. This defect, affecting Model Y and Model 3 cars produced between 2020 and 2024, could cause the bonnet to unlatch and fly open while driving, posing a severe safety risk.
What’s the Issue?
The recall notice, which affects 34,993 vehicles, highlights that the bonnet latch assembly may not detect when the bonnet is opened by the driver. Consequently, it fails to warn the driver that the bonnet is open. This lack of warning could lead to the bonnet opening abruptly while the vehicle is in motion, obstructing the driver’s view and significantly increasing the risk of accidents.
The notice states, “Due to a manufacturing defect, the bonnet latch assembly may not detect when it is opened by the driver and therefore fail to warn the driver of ‘open bonnet’. If the vehicle is driven with an unlatched bonnet, it may open abruptly when driving and could result in obstruction of the driver’s view.” This scenario heightens the danger of potential accidents, potentially causing injury or even death to road users.
Immediate Action for Tesla Owners
Tesla will be contacting the owners of the affected vehicles directly. The company plans to install an over-the-air software update on all affected cars to rectify the issue. This update will enhance the bonnet latch assembly’s functionality to ensure it accurately detects when the bonnet is opened and provides the necessary warnings to the driver.
Owners are advised to check their vehicle’s software version. “If your vehicle is running on software version 2024.20.3 or later, your vehicle is not subject to this issue,” the recall notice states. To verify the software version, owners can navigate to ‘Controls’ > ‘Software’ on their Tesla touchscreen.
Why This Matters
This recall is part of Tesla’s broader commitment to ensuring the safety and reliability of its vehicles. The company has faced several recalls in recent years, addressing various issues ranging from software glitches to hardware malfunctions. Each recall serves as a crucial step in maintaining customer trust and upholding the high safety standards expected from a leading automotive manufacturer.
Next Steps for Tesla Owners
