Studies Confirm TWO Glasses of Wine at Night Can Help You Lose Weight So Let’s All Drink a Toast to Science

Bottoms up, ladies! Research confirms that having not one, BUT TWO glasses of wine before bed can help keep your weight in check.

If you ever needed an excuse to refill your glass, then this is it. And it is pretty much the greatest news we’ve heard all day!

We’ve been told about the numerous health benefits of having a glass of red wine – it can reduce the risk of heart disease, assist in memory function and possibly prevent certain cancers. But most studies suggest we stop at just one glass, which really isn’t fair. Because wine is delicious. And one is often not enough, especially when you have kids.

Two different studies from Washington State University and Harvard Medical School confirm that it’s okay to have another glass of red wine before bed, especially if you’re trying to keep the kilos in check. In fact, the study from Harvard University found those who drink half a bottle of wine a day have a 70 per cent reduced risk of obesity compared to non-drinkers.

Best. News. Ever.

health benefits of red wine and weight loss

What is it about red wine that is so magical (apart from the fact that it can make parenting after 5pm A LOT easier)? The mysterious weight loss magic comes from a polyphenol (a type of micronutrient) called resveratrol.

According to Washington State University professor Min Du, “Polyphenols in fruit, including resveratrol, increase gene expression that enhances the oxidation of dietary fats, [help] to keep the body in balance and prevent obesity and metabolic dysfunction.”

Red wine and weight loss

As Min Du explains, resveratrol transforms “white fat” into “beige fat” which basically means the fat is easier to burn off.

What this means is that you still need to exercise. But now you can finish your day of toddler chasing with a much deserved DOUBLE glass of wine. Because, let’s face it, wine makes everything better, even calorie burning. And those pre-baby skinny jeans aren’t going to stretch anytime soon.

Of course, there is always a bit of fine print to these studies. As it turns out, the best polyphenols for weight loss are found in fruits. The top contenders include blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, grapes and apples. But wine counts too.

So pour another guilt-free glass, mums. It’s good for your waist line. Super smart researchers say so (and who are we to argue with super smart researchers?).

Cheers!
