Deciding on a baby name is a pretty tricky task. Many parents want something that stands out from the crowd. One way to do this? Change the spelling of a common name to something a little less common.

Uniquely spelled names are nothing new. A lot of names have various spellings that are still easy to identify. For example, Lilly, Lily and Lillie are all pretty common options for the same name as is Haley, Hayley and Haylie.

And then you’ve got the other end of the spectrum – the unusual spelling choices that are so out of this world that you probably won’t even realise what name it’s meant to be.

We’ve rounded up our top picks for these uniquely spelled names that had us completely blown away. These are real-life names that people have shared through social media, Reddit and other forums. Yes, people actually walk around with these uniquely spelled names!

There are y’s thrown all over the shop, extra vowels and hyphens, and a bunch of consonants thrown into the mix for good measure.

Get ready to be baffled by our 2023 edition of the most uniquely spelled names. May the pronunciation gods be with you!

21 uniquely spelled names of 2023

1. Hellzel – What Hazel would look like, if her dad was Satan.

2. Fylap – This weirdo option for Phillip can fly away, thank you.

3. Reighleigh – When you really love the “eigh” combination. A simple Riley would have sufficed in our books, but hey. Or should we say, Heigh.

4. Mhavrych – Anyone wanna take a stab at what this name is meant to be? It’s a tough one – Maverick. Yes, it looks like a mess of consonants, but, it’s meant to be a creative rendition of Maverick.

5. Chelc – This one made me laugh. It’s Chelsea. But like Chel – C. See?

6. Brytnneigh – Britney called. She wants you to stop ruining her name.

7. Sssst – This one is my very favourite! There are four S’s… guys. Are you ready for it? It’s FOREST! I don’t know whether to bow down to these parents or throw a shoe at them.

8. Aeleighah – Also known as Aliyah.

9. R-Chee – Hyphens are fun, right? Especially in names? Apparently, Archie’s parents thought so!

10. Jawzaiyah – Here’s another tricky one for you. It starts with a J and there is usually an S in the middle, not a collection of uncommon consonants. It’s Josiah, folks. Did you get it?

11. Rocksann – The rockstar version of Roxanne.

12. Jaeysin – The sinful version of Jason.

13. Merandah – What you get when you combine the totally normal name of Miranda with a porch.

14. U’Neek – When you really want your kid to be considered unique but also really love random apostrophes. At least it doesn’t say U’Reek.

15. Grayss – Grace is such a pretty, elegant name. And then there’s Grayss.

16. Lawroen – It starts off like it’s trying to be Lawrence but then ends in all ‘wrong’. It’s Lauren, ladies and gents.

17. Payj or Paij – Ending with a J is never a good sign. Paige is probably your better option here.

18. Jewelyahna – This one says Juliana, sort of.

19. Khaedanse – I guess it’s better than K-Dance.

20. C’KRET – Okay, okay, remember how I said Sssst was the BEST in unusual spelling? I was mistaken. This one wins. Hands down. This one says ‘secret’ and apparently the mum chose it because she had kept her pregnancy a secret from most people. Bow down, folks. Bow down.
