HEAD LICE. Two words that strike fear into every parent’s heart.
We’ve all got the note home from school/childcare/kindy at least once. “Dear Parents, it has come to our attention that a couple of children in your year level have head lice” And we rush to our cherub’s head to see if they are one of them. And they are.
There is nothing like spending half a day treating all of your children for head lice…then yourself, then your husband! Pass the wine.
We’ve been known to sneak into our children’s bedrooms and put an overnight treatment onto their heads while they are sleeping. Desperate, desperate times.
The biggest lesson for a first-time lice parent is that if you don’t get them properly the first time, they will hang around like that friend you didn’t invite to the party who now won’t leave and keeps drinking all the Prosecco!
Why? Because lice are as contagious as a belly laugh on a full train. But not for the reasons you may think.
Contrary to popular belief:
- Lice cannot jump
- Lice don’t care if you have clean or dirty hair
- Lice don’t care if you have long or short hair
So why then, do some kids seem to get nits ALL.THE.TIME? Well, there are a couple of reasons and none of them really point to poor hygiene or bad parenting!
Maybe you have kids who love a cuddle… or a group selfie! Whilst it’s true that lice can’t jump, they can crawl or swing through the hair very quickly. Direct contact with someone who has head lice will almost guarantee sharing. Or perhaps there’s a lot of wearing other people’s headwear [caps, sun hats, beanies. headbands] going on and all that swapping is spreading those little critters. Or maybe, the number one reason that your child seems to be constantly infested with nits is that, despite your best efforts, they were never really cleared of it in the first place.
Prevention is always the best cure, so try to train your children:
- Not to share hats, beanies, scarves
- Always put long hair up into a pony tail
- Don’t share hair brushes or hair ties, clips etc
- Check their hair regularly
It will feel horrible but it’s not going to be horrible unless you find something and trust me when I say that a few lice on one child’s head is a breeze compared to a full blow household infestation.
Of course, where prevention fails treatment must start and constantly treating your family for head lice is a pain. Many over the counter treatments are smelly, messy and if you’re having to do it regularly – expensive. Not to mention, our kids get resistant to the various products and so you never know if the treatment is even going to work!
As mums with school kids, head lice is a very real threat to our family’s scalps (and our sanity!) so we were genuinely interested to learn about this new product, the Licetec V-Comb.
Developed in WA by head lice crusader, Mr Maor, the Licetec V-Comb is an electrical hand held device which incorporates combing and vacuuming to eliminate head lice AND their eggs from hair with the simple action of combing. That’s it. There are no chemicals and the device can be used over and over again. This product could save families hundreds of dollars a year, but you’ll see a return on investment the very first time you use it!
Here’s how it works:
- Attach one of the four capture filters that the device comes with [use a new filter for each person you are treating]
- Adjust the combing angle to straight or raking position
- Separate the hair into sections and comb each sections starting from the scalp
- Repeat until the entire head of hair has been combed
- Discard the capture filter
- Clean the Licetec V-Comb
- Treat your next patient!
Check out how easy it is in this video:
The V-Comb retails at $59.99 and comes with four capture filters so you can treat the whole family at the same time!
This makes the first 4 treatments around $15 each (far cheaper than most chemical solutions) then for every treatment after that the cost is $1.45 (the cost to replace the filters!). If you have more members in your family or if they become infested again, you can also purchase replacement capture filters in packs of 8.
As I’m sure you would agree, it is, after a regular metal nit comb, the most cost effective treatment and prevention device on the market.
Plus it can be cleaned and used on the whole family (or school class if need be)! Just brilliant (in a not-so-brilliant situation!) 😉
So do yourself a favour and avoid stealth-trips to treat your kids in their sleep, the screams of with the repeated rinse and comb and those nasty chemicals and give the V-comb a try!
Thanks to our friends at Licetec, we’ve got two of these magical machines to give away, valued at $120. To enter, simply complete the entry form below and tell us in the comments what you love about the Licetec V-Comb and you could be a winner!
