Married At First Sight relationship expert Mel Schilling has shared a heartbreaking update about her cancer journey, revealing the disease has now spread to her brain.
The much-loved TV personality, who has spent more than a decade guiding couples through the highs and lows of love on Married at First Sight, has been candid about her health battle since her diagnosis in late 2023. Now, in an emotional message to fans, Schilling says doctors have told her there are no further treatment options available.
Her story has resonated deeply with viewers and followers around the world, not just because of her high-profile role on television, but because of the powerful message she continues to share about listening to your body and seeking help when something doesn’t feel right.
From stomach pain to cancer diagnosis
Schilling’s cancer journey began in December 2023 when doctors discovered a tumour in her colon during a scan. The growth, which she later nicknamed “Terry,” was roughly 5cm in size – about the size of a lemon.
Initially, the tumour was surgically removed and doctors believed the cancer had been successfully treated. However, follow-up scans months later revealed the disease had spread to her lungs, meaning it had metastasised and required further treatment.
Schilling underwent 16 rounds of chemotherapy while continuing to work and film Married at First Sight. She also prepared to take part in a gene-specific clinical trial, which doctors hoped might help slow or stop the cancer’s progression.
But over Christmas, Schilling began experiencing alarming new symptoms.
“Blinding headaches and numbness” on one side of her body led to further medical testing, which revealed the cancer had spread to her brain.
Despite undergoing radiotherapy, Schilling later revealed her oncology team had reached the devastating conclusion that no further treatment options were available.
“My light is starting to fade — and quickly,” she shared in an emotional message to fans, while also expressing gratitude for the support of her family and loved ones.
The symptoms she initially ignored
Looking back, Schilling has spoken openly about the warning signs she experienced before her diagnosis, symptoms that are commonly associated with bowel cancer. She revealed she had experienced:
- Extreme fatigue
- Unexplained weight loss
- Loss of appetite
- Prolonged constipation
- Severe abdominal pain
At first, she dismissed these signs as the result of travel, stress and an intense work schedule.
Like many people, Schilling said she prioritised work and family responsibilities over her own health. It wasn’t until the pain became severe that further investigations eventually revealed the tumour blocking her bowel.
She has since urged others to take symptoms seriously and push for answers if something doesn’t feel right.
“If something doesn’t feel right, please get it checked out,” she said, stressing that early detection can save lives.
What is bowel cancer?
Bowel cancer, also known as colorectal or colon cancer, develops in the large intestine and is one of the most common cancers in Australia.
According to health experts, the disease often begins as small growths called polyps that develop in the bowel lining. Over time, some of these polyps can turn into cancer.
Common symptoms may include:
- Changes in bowel habits such as diarrhoea or constipation
- Blood in the stool or bleeding from the rectum
- Persistent abdominal pain or bloating
- Unexplained weight loss
- Fatigue or weakness
However, not everyone experiences symptoms early on, which is why screening tests are so important.
When detected early, bowel cancer is highly treatable, with survival rates significantly higher than when the disease is diagnosed at later stages.

A powerful message for others
Throughout her cancer journey, Schilling has remained determined to use her platform to raise awareness about bowel cancer and encourage others to prioritise their health.
Her story has also highlighted an important issue in healthcare — that symptoms, particularly in women, can sometimes be dismissed or misdiagnosed, leading to delays in treatment.
Now, despite the heartbreaking prognosis she faces, Schilling continues to share her story with honesty and courage.
Surrounded by her husband Gareth and their daughter Maddie, she says she is focusing on the love and support around her.
And while the future remains uncertain, her message remains clear: listen to your body, seek help when something feels wrong, and never ignore the signs.
Wishing you all the best Mel. xx
