How to Remove a Splinter – This Hack is a Game Changer for Parents!

Splinters are the worst. They are difficult to remove, especially in overly anxious kids who think that you are going to hurt them anytime you even think about grabbing the tweezers.

It’s a stressful situation for all involved but one mum has uncovered the easiest way to remove a splinter – no pain!

And all you need is a plastic syringe.

How to remove a splinter – plastic syringe

1. Cut the top off a plastic syringe so that it’s open and in a large circle.

2. Place the syringe over the splinter – where the splinter is poking out of the skin.

3. Put pressure on the hand around the splinter so that you are squeezing the skin to push the splinter out.

4. Eventually, the splinter will make its way out – no need to get the tweezers or squeeze!

Tanya shows us exactly how it’s done in a TikTok video and it really is super simple! NOTE: Sliver is just another word for a splinter.

How to remove a splinter – Baking soda

We’ve seen a few other ways to easily remove splinters including the baking soda trick. If you don’t have a syringe handy, you can try this idea instead:

  1. Mix 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda with water to form a paste.
  2. Clean the skin around the splinter with soap and water.
  3. Apply the paste to and around the splinter.
  4. Place a sterile bandage on top.
  5. Leave the bandage on for 24 hours, and then remove it.

Medicine tricks

Another cool hack? This sneaky trick to feed babies medicine. Simply place the medicine into a syringe or dispenser, add a baby bottle lid and feed to bubba like a bottle.

Bub is tricked into thinking it’s a bottle of milk. And you’ve got a way to get that medicine down the hatch without your infant spitting most of it back up.

For older kids, this is a good idea too – Place some juice right behind the medicine in the syringe to quickly wash down the icky flavour.

Just make sure you’ve got the measurements correct and that you put the medication in FIRST.

Slapping fish sleep trick

Here’s another cheeky one, but it does need a bit of a disclaimer so here we go:

*Using a slapping fish to put your baby to sleep is only okay IF you are watching them. It should also be noted that baby should be turned onto her back for all sleep as this is the SIDS-approved way to sleep. However, if you are desperate for sleep and your baby loves a good pat on the back to go to sleep, then this fish-slapping toy is a winner*

Okay, now that we have settled that, let’s move on to how this works. You see, this dancing fish is actually a pet toy, designed to make your cat giddy with cat joy. But it also happens to make a very rhythmic slapping, similar to a pat, pat, pat, that all new parents are used to.

So, when your arms need a bit of a break, enter the fish slapping toy. But not without you right beside them, of course.
