10 of the Best Baby Sleeping Bags for 2021

Whether your baby likes long sleeves, no sleeves, has hip dysplasia or wriggles a lot – they’ll all be sleeping warm and safe with our top picks of best baby sleeping bags! Spoiler alert: they’re all super CUTE!

Anyone who has ever put a baby to bed with a sheet or a blanket might know how they can move around the cot if your bub is a restless sleeper. And of course, kicks them off and then wakes because they are cold.

Switch out the blanket and sheet drama in favour of a baby sleeping bag. They’re the ultimate game-changer … babies stay snug because they can’t kick them off and stay toasty warm in the process! YAY!

What to look for in buying a baby sleeping bag

FIT: As tempting as it is to buy a sleeping bag a size or two larger than what you need, thinking you’ll get more life out of it, don’t do it. Fit is SO very important for safe sleeping. The sleeping bag should be the correct size for the baby with a fitted neck, armholes or sleeves and no hood. Red Nose Australia also advise making sure the baby’s sleeping bag is made in such a way that the baby can’t slip or wriggle down into the bag.

WEIGHT: Where you live and what season it is will play a role in which TOG baby sleeping bag you need. For example, those in mild and humid Queensland will require a much lighter baby sleeping bag than those in freezing Tassie. See TOG information below!

WASHING: Is it easy to clean? A baby sleeping bag is pretty much an extra set of pyjamas-come-blanket so it’s going to need a regular spin through the washing machine. But if it’s going to take two days to dry, you might need to consider rotating multiple sleeping bags or choosing a sleeping bag that can be tumble dried.

What the heck is TOG?

If you’re new to the term TOG, don’t panic, we’ve got you! TOG stands for Thermal Overall Grade and it is a unit of measurement for insulation and warmth of sleepwear and bedding.

The lower the TOG rating, the lighter the fabric. The higher the TOG rating, the more padded, insulated and snug the sleeping bag is for warmth. TOG rated products are awesome for parents, as a baby can’t regulate their body temperature like adults can. Getting the TOG right for the room temperature means your bub will have a safe and comfortable sleep.

To understand which Australian sleeping bag TOG values are right for different room temperatures, follow a simple set of general guidelines such as below:

  • 0.2 TOG – for room temperature between 24°C and 27°C.
  • 1.0 TOG – for room temperature between 20°C and 24°C.
  • 2.5 TOG – for room temperature between 16°C and 20°C.
  • 3.5 TOG – for room temperature below 16°C.
